I know it's Mr. Makin's job to represent even guilty clients, and it's true that some people just make some bad decisions and need help getting their life back on track, but I have to question the ethics of a man who will try his best to make sure that violent man with a long history of predatory and abusive behavior escapes the consequences so that he can continue to victimize the most vulnerable in society. As a private practice, he can choose who he represents; after 3 years of dealing with a man who continues to blatantly violate the law and other people in his path even while waiting for trial, Mr. Makin repeatedly stalls trial--knowing that the evidence against his client is overwhelming--not only delaying justice for the victims, but causing them constant anxiety and stress as they face trial date after trial date, watching them come and go due to continuances granted by the courts because "defense counsel is on vacation". We all know a stall tactic when we see it, and it's apparent that he is hoping that the victims get tired of waiting and give up. I would ask Mr. Makin what he would do if someone did to his wife or daughter or granddaughter what his client has done to literally countless women in Jefferson County. Would he play these same games on behalf of that man if it someone who he loved that was a victim? I would hope not. If the question was turned around on me and I was asked whether or not I would want someone to vehemently defend my father, brother, husband, son under these circumstances, my answer would be an unequivocal "no". If any man in my life had done what his client has done, continues to do, and will continue to do until he is stopped, I would want him to face the consequences and serve a prison sentence long enough to keep as many people safe from him as possible. The Constitution is being rendered useless with the constant antics, all for profit. Mr. Makin is obviously an intelligent man who, based on the accounts of most of his clients, is compassionate and caring. As an intelligent man, he knows full well by now that his client is neither innocent, nor is he just a man who made some mistakes and will take this opportunity to clean up his life and get on the straight and narrow. His own actions as he has awaited the trial speak for themselves. And where is all that compassion and care for the victims and survivors? Mr. Makin is not a public defender. He is not bound to his client by some moral, legal, constitutional and ethical obligation. Is the money for this one client really worth putting even more people in danger? Delay may be an effective tactic in a case where the evidence against a client is overwhelming, but it certainly isn't an ethical tactic, and it is causing more trauma and pain to the victims and their families. I guess I'm advertising for Mr. Makin within this reveiw. If you're a guilty, greedy, grubby scumbag and abuser who knows they're guilty and has no interest in doing the right thing, as long as you have some cash at your disposal, this is the man to see.

James Makin and his team are first class. Both times I have needed him, he and his team have been there, and taken away any doubt or worries I may have had.
