I hired Ms. Lira Bravo back in 2017 for a permanent residency case. At that time, my now legally ex-husband and I had applied for residency for me. However, a year into our marriage I found out that he was cheating on me with multiple women - so as I found out - after, being okay enough to drive. I drove to my then lawyer’s office. Ms. Lira Bravo’s paralegal advised to me to stay in the marriage as if I did not, I didn’t have a case for residency any longer. She told me that if I divorced, my pending residency would just be declined. I asked for other options as I myself am a social worker with background in domestic violence and asked about VAWA. The paralegal just told me that being emotional distraught by my ex cheating on me with three different women at the same time, was not a form of emotional abuse. Of course I had other examples of the abuse in my marriage, however, the paralegal did not care to hear me out and just told me to stay in the marriage. Months later, as I was approaching for my interview, I flat out told them that we were no longer together. Then Monica, for the first time called me to tell me she was no longer my lawyer because she could not represent me any longer. I want to say that I went to them to let them know of what I had happened in Aug 2018. I never had any other contact from the office if we had worked out, how I was doing? Nothing. My interview was April 2019. So it had been 8 months since I had last spoken to them. They told me to stay married, so I did. I did not receive any other check up from them. Now, I am pending for VAWA with another lawyer, because this lawyer heard me out; and convinced me that I was not crazy, and that I do qualify for VAWA. My new lawyer also has continuously checked on me, and we have spoken on multiple occasions unlike with Ms. Lira Bravo. In the time that Monica was my lawyer I had only spoken with her twice. Once when I hired her, and the second time over the phone when she called to tell me that she was no longer going to represent me a week before my interview with immigration. I went to her because of the lies that she tells our community on how she wants to assist us, and help us. Because of how she saw growing up that other lawyers lied to our community, and took advantage. But please do not fall for her lies, because she too takes advantage of us.
