My husband was riding his bicycle and was hit by a careless driver in 2015. His lower leg, kneecap, and thumb were broken and, nine weeks later, his leg became severely infected and he was in danger of losing it. His leg was saved, but he endured five weeks of hospitalization, five months of IV antibiotics, 17 surgeries, 22 months of having to wear an external fixator, as well as severe long-term pain.
