I have delayed doing this review because I didn't know if I could articulate and describe how incredible Mr Gorham and his staff are and how grateful I am to them. However I, even if my words fail, want you to know, if you're looking for a sign that this is the right lawyer for you? This is it. I promise you won't find a more caring, sharp, quick witted, loyal, honest, intelligent, assertive yet gentle when needed, experienced lawyer than Mr Gorham. The January before the beginning of the first round of Covid I was hit in the rear by a semi-truck at a very high rate of speed while I was driving home in my Honda on a rural interstate. This accident WAS NOT my fault. The other party lied all the way to the end, said it was all my fault. It was my word against theirs. Mr Gorham & his staff worked so hard on my case. I knew what had happened and I was so grateful to God for sparing my life. We eventually found a witness. The witness was able to validate that my recollection of the event happened exactly as I said it did. My case took a while to settle outside of court due to delays in my care because most of my needed treatment occurred during the height of covid. There were many times those delays got me extremely frustrated. Mr Gorham was very patient with me. I was not the easiest client to deal with. Yet, Mr Gorham always reassured me that we'd get them in the end. Many times he talked to me outside of his office hours and even when he would be out of town, just to calm my anxiety. I know now, he was just the lawyer I needed. In those 3 years, I learned to trust him and felt safe as his client. He made me feel empowered and helped me stand strong in my truth.Eventually, it all worked out just the way he said it would. I'll never forget the day he walked out of a mediation where we were extremely close to finally settling for an reasonable amount over a dispute regarding a measley amount spent for the mediation lawyer's fee. I was thinking in my mind, what is he doing. Are we really walking away from an ideal settlement over this? Well, we did. I remember he took out a picture of what was left of my car and boldly declared to the mediation lawyer, "really, look at her car? And they want to argue over pennies? Tell them we'll see them in court." He gathered his things and said "let's go Jill." and as he strutted out of that mediation towards the elevator, I followed behind trying my best to look as confident as I could. I couldn't wait until the elevator doors closed to ask him "what are you doing!?!?". I looked at him and he had his head held high. He said "it's the principle of it." and "give me three days. They'll call and I promise they'll see it our way." Then we walked out of that office building. I remember how confident he was in the move he just made. His head held high with his chest stuck out, he put his sunglasses on. I looked at him and said,"OK, I trust you." He said,"good, you should!". I literally have never felt as empowered as I did in that moment. He was amazing, even a little cocky, yes. However, knowing him as I do now. I'm telling you in a case like this, you need him on YOUR side. I know I'd be shaking in my boots if I knew I had to be questioned in a deposition or cross examined in court by Mr Robert Gorham. He's intimidating, but compassionate when he needs to be. He was made to be a lawyer and he is the BEST THERE IS. So, exactly three days later, he called me. Guess what? They did exactly what he said they would. They saw it our way. We settled. In conclusion, if you need legal services, CALL MR GORHAM. He's the one you need. I PROMISE you there is no other lawyer in Alabama who will work harder and fight more for you than Mr Gorham. Tons of respect for him. This man doesn't remain a lawyer for the money, he does it to help others and because he loves it. I assure you he could easily retire and live in comfort for the rest of his life. He chooses to continue to fight for people like me and you! Also, Kim Bates is an amazing paralegal. Perfect team!!! A+++++++++++++

Mr Hester took our case and it was a blessing for us. It was quite lengthy, but we were treated as we were his only clients (I know that was not the case). After many hours and much hard work in and out of the courtroom, Mr. Hester was successful. I would trust this honorable man with any matter what so ever.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Birmingham, Alabama?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
