Title: Disappointed with the high cost for a simple Will Review: Kayla Graben with Davis & Davis in Daphne I recently engaged this lawyer's services to update a simple will. My two previous wills, which were comparable and with the same legal firm, cost me around $400. This time, I was charged $1,250 for what essentially amounted to the same level of service. When I wrote to her about adjusting the cost she wrote back negatively and condescendingly.

Great experience. Richard helped with negotiations and finalizing commercial documents. Answered complex questions, simplifying them for my use. Additionally, he advised on normal practices as opposed to my thoughts regarding a few different scenarios which helped rationalize the direction I needed to take. I've used 2 civil attorneys previously, and I was charged more while they provided less detail and care towards my goals. I will use this firm from now on!

Attorney Sherri Smelley was a complete God-send to me and my son. We were fighting a long-term tedious battle and she took it head on. Mrs. Smelley has a creative lawyering strategy for each particular instance. She is punctual, respectful, and ALWAYS prepared. She keeps open communication with her clients, and her staff is wonderful as well! My son and I retained Mrs. Smelley for a divorce and child custody case, and she by far exceeded every personal and professional expectation. She is personable and will inquire your opinion and thoughts before making any legal decisions. I highly recommend Sherri Smelley to anyone looking for a superb attorney. I will, without hesitation, retain Sherri Smelley's legal counsel in the future for any other concerning matters!

I've known Sherri for many years on a personal level but recently sought her counsel on some estate issues. She has always been one who strives to seek excellence in everything she does and my mother and I have again seen this excellence again on her professional side as well. She was able to assist with appropriate correspondence and got the job done! She really does care about her clients and puts her heart into serving their needs. Thank you to you and your staff for being such a blessing in such a difficult time.

For more than 20 years, I’ve been a criminal defense trial lawyer. For over 15 years I’ve known Scott and I regularly refer personal injury cases to him. As a lawyer, referring clients to another lawyer is a big deal. In essence, you are placing your reputation on the line when you send a client to another lawyer. Scott always delivers great results for his clients. Scott is honestly the most organized and efficient attorney I’ve ever met. In addition, he is relentless in his dedication to obtain the best result for his clients. Frankly, he is magician with insurance adjusters. He seems to have some kind of instinct that tells him what the insurance companies need in order to pay large settlements. If you want someone that is going to get the most money for you, call Scott. If you want a lawyer that will keep you informed about the status of your case without you having to ask him, call Scott. If you want a lawyer that has integrity and that his word means something, call Scott. I’ll end with this…I honestly can not count how many people I’ve referred to Scott over the years. I’m certain it’s more than 20 people. In every matter, my clients called me after Scott completed their case to tell me “thank you” for referring them to Scott. You will not find anyone better to handle your personal injury case.

Scott was an incredible attorney who guided me through every step of my car accident and insurance claim. His expertise and dedication made the entire process smooth and stress-free. If you're dealing with an accident, don't try to handle it yourself—let Scott take the reins. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain with him on your side! Thank you, Scott!

Attorney Scott Soutullo did a great job on my personal injury case. Communication was good. He was professional and courteous. He was timely. Very knowledgeable. He was able to secure us a settlement triple what I had anticipated. I would definitely use him again and recommend him to others.

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Daphne, Alabama?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
