I hired this person since 2019 and every time I would come and tell her about my case she would laugh in my face. Despite that because of my desperation, I still went ahead and hired her. After paying her about 3k, she stopped calling me and answering my calls. I wish I had never crossed her paths with her.

Trying to find a smart, honest, and truly caring lawyer can be a scary and difficult task. Luckily, gratefully, & thankfully I met Mary L Carstarphen and by the end of our first meeting I realized right away that she knew w/ confidence what exact legal and moral steps we needed to take to complete my application to become a Permanent US Resident. Throughout the process there is so much info that needs to be gathered, so many questions to be answered, & so many deadlines that need to be met . If it wasn’t for Mary’s hard work, attention to detail, persistence & willingness to do what it takes to get things done correctly I would never have been so fortunate to have become a Permanent US Resident . Throughout the entire process Mary was always available to talk & or communicate w/ me which is and was a huge, huge deal for me . From start to finish Mary continuously assisted me & showed great patience with me and my efforts to help . Mary let me know that she was with me until the end no matter what ! She knows that smart and hard work pays off . Because of Mary’s professional work I am just now starting to realize all my newfound freedoms that come along w/ becoming a legal resident . - it’s a great feeling and well worth the sacrifice. - so do , give Mary a call... I can finally live & work near my twin daughters that wasn’t possible before. Thank You Mary .

From the beginning to the end of my entire application process and the compilations of work provided on my behalf, Mary provided a diligence and amazing services. I specifically hired her to help put together my immigration case for better results and she did. She explained in details what her job entails and got the job done. Attorney Carstarphen also went out of her way to get some answers for me every steps of the way. Her excellent ability in her work truly shows what she is able to help anyone struggling with immigration issues and other attorney services is above excellence. My family and I will forever be grateful for your caring and hard work you have implemented in your work to approve my citizenship as it is rare. I would recommend and spread your name and work everywhere as needed in this country. Your work will not go without recognition. Thank you Mary and your office for serving our family. I truly admire you as you’re one of a kind. Take care and God bless.

Attorney Carstarphen is an experienced and detailed orientated immigration attorney. She assisted me with filing my I-485, I-130, and I-765. Not only did she compile all the paper work on my behalf, but she explained every aspect of it to me and provided me with information I needed to help me make appropriate decisions throughout the process. She is very knowledge about immigration processes; everything she told me would happen throughout the process did. Her knowledge and advice can be trusted. She is honest in her dealings and goes above and beyond, regardless of how large or small your case may be. Despite the fact she had multiple clients to manage, she remained prompt with all her services to me and provided a one-on-one time and hands-on approach. During my final interview with USCIS, the immigration attorney specifically mentioned that my case file was very well compiled and that she was impressed with the attorney's work. I have been thoroughly satisfied with the services rendered by Attorney Carstarphen and strongly encourage any individual seeking immigration services to hire this attorney; you will not regret it.

We were really getting the run around with our bank that financed the farm. They had in simple terms did a number on us and were trying to get away with it. We went to Mrs. Handy and all were resolved with minimal complications considering what we were up against. She has the knowledge to go up against the Big Bank and their multiple attorney's and make them look ridiculous. The Judge saw right through them in what they were trying to do and justice was served with Mrs. Handy on our side. If you want someone you can depend on to be on your attorney, then look no further!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Gadsden, Alabama?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
