Pros
1
Exceptional knowledge and expertise in the law
“Ms. Sullivan has actively engaged in challenging and updating Alabama law. Recent changes regarding forced payment of college for children in divorce settlements is one example of unjust law Ms. Sullivan has successfully challenged.”
2
Personalized and dedicated representation
“It was abundantly clear that she had a personal interest in us not just as clients but as people. Her representation of us in court was head and shoulders above our first attorney and I have no complaints whatsoever about the way she handled our case.”
3
Skilled in appeals and written arguments
“As mentioned by another reviewer, she is the editor of Alabama Law Weekly and is intimately familiar with decisions that are being written by all levels of the judiciary in this state. Her appeals arguments are extremely well written and the facts well documented.”
4
Aggressive and effective in the courtroom
“I have been in and out of court several times on this custody situation and have been forced to file multiple appeals, but it is in no way a reflection of poor representation on Joan-Marie's part. I have recommended her to others and will continue to do so.”
Cons
1
Difficulty in communication and responsiveness
“I retained Joan Marie with a very high retainer and could not get her to call me back with additional information. I left ove”
2
Scheduling conflicts leading to missed court appearances
“Problems occurred during the first week when she was suppose to be in court representing me before the judge; Mrs. Dean stated she had a conflict and couldn't appear so she had another lawyer attend for her.”

Joan-Marie came highly recommended from a friend who hired her for their adoption. She is a top notch attorney for Family Law and was an amazing divorce attorney for me. Joan-Marie helped me to understand the divorce process and gave me solid, sound advice throughout my divorce. Her staff is very friendly and helpful and returned my calls and emails quickly. I would recommend Joan-Marie to anyone needing a knowledgeable, hard-working Family Law Attorney.

I had an extremely long drawn out divorce that resulted in me switching attorneys, and the difference was night and day. Joan was great to work with, provided sound advice, and represented my interests with great professionalism even though the opposing counsel and opposing client did not always take the high road. Joan was able to get a resolution to my pending divorce that allowed me to move on with my life. I would recommend her to anyone that faces the unfortunate reality of divorce.

My husband and I were recommended to Joan-Marie by another attorney . He did so because we needed an attorney that has experience with Appeals and he said she was the best. We have been in an adoption case for two years. Long story short, we were handed a 7 week old baby whose birth parents were more concerned with drugs than him. Both parents have been incarcerated and thru our legal system the birth father was given an appointed attorney to represent him after the adoption was finalized. The birth father wanted to appeal the adoption. We have been thru so much with our case and all we wanted to do is protect our baby. Joan Marie accepted our case and immediately after our initial meeting I felt a huge burden lifted from me. She explained everything to us and what to expect. I left her office knowing our son would be protected because Joan-Marie was fighting for him. She went to court for us once and almost immediately she won that round. We never had to see a court room again. The Alabama Appellate court dismissed the appeal the birth father filed due to her diligence. We have our son who can now have a happy safe life and the adoption is final. We owe much of this to Joan-Marie and the role she played as our attorney.

I hired Joan-Marie to handle my divorce and I could not have been happier with the personal attention that I received, the outcome of the divorce, and follow-up that's taken place in the years to follow. I had been married for over 11 years of my military career, with two small children, when I found myself going thru a divorce. Joan-Marie went out of her way to talk me thru the process, was expert on Alabama divorce law, and understand the implications of military service in a divorce. She places the needs of her clients above those of her self and always makes the time to meet or talk on the telephone. I could not have had a better experience and outcome. Through her understanding of law and negotiation efforts, I was able to retain 100% of my military retirement and a substantial amount of my assets. When my ex-wife asked for additional child support 6 years following our divorce, I again turned to Joan-Marie. Although I was required to pay more child support, since my salary had increased, Joan-Marie provided expert advice and documentation to ensure the modification was reasonable. The qualities that I like best about Joan-Marie is that she's straight forward and honest. She knows the law and will be honest about the pros and cons of any legal action. She is sensitive to the emotional ups and downs of going thru a divorce. Joan-Marie is absolutely the "best of the best" and I highly recommend her to those who are faced with divorce!

He was very curtiuos. He always was on time. And the main thing for me was he always found loopholes where the patrol officers violated my rights. He got mine thrown out. Thank you!!!!

I consulted Mr.Tewalt on my husbands immigration case. He was kind and patient and listened to all the facts of the case. When I finished, Mr.Tewalt helped us find a solution at no cost. He did not charge a consultation fee as promised and refused to take payment for his service. A truly honest attorney is hard to find. I have been to many attorneys for this case and he was the only one who refused to just take a retainer and get back to me.

We were very pleased with Mr. Howie. Every phone call or email was answered in a very timely manner. He laid out all the options and kept us from going to trial. He is a tough negotiator and will fight for you. We got the best possible outcome that we could have hoped for and certainly recommend him for any criminal charge that someone may be dealing with. Thank you Mr. Howie!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Huntsville, Alabama?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
