I generally appreciate how they handled the case itself. They helped me to understand what was important and make sure we did what was necessary. That being said, towards the end of the case, they asked for an additional retainer which I paid with the trust that any unused retainer would be refunded. I ended up negotiating an early end to the case, which brought it to a close sooner than expected. After the case closed out I patiently waited for the judge's orders and final executed agreement and it wasn't until I contacted them twice that I was finally given these documents. They told me that their email server had crashed, though apparently they made no effort to verify that necessary communications had gone through. Once I told them I wanted to close out the case and get my final itemized billing statement it became very difficult to reach them. I had to contact Legal Shield just to get Mr. Campbell to answer. He eventually sent me a statement with many obvious overbillings, such as: * an erroneous process server fee (which he admits) * billing for a subpoena for a court appearance Mr. Campbell missed (which had to be rescheduled, everyone else was there but him) * billing for me to go back and forth with them to obtain the end of case documents they never sent me Mr. Campbell said he would review the statement and make any corrections then get back to me. However, since this response from him I haven't heard back from him and it is clear that he is not interested in providing fair and accurate accounting. I'm not sure what's going on, if he's just busy or if he really doesn't care and thinks it's beneath him to be accountable to his client who's paid him thousands of dollars for representation. Whatever it is, it's unacceptable and he should be ashamed of himself. I placed my trust in him and was not treated like a valued client in the end. Keep that in mind when you think of letting him hold onto your retainer. You may not get it back and he may not care to be transparently accountable about how it was spent.

Hired John to take on a claim I had against a car insurance company that was incredibly difficult to deal with in settling this matter. The Insurance company's client rear-ended me, sent me to the hospital and I had lasting injuries afterwards. John immediately took the case and spent nearly a year arguing with the insurance company. In the end, he got a huge settlement for me!! Amazing attorney!

I went to John Campbell's office after having another attorney work on my case for 2 years... He was understanding and always available or called back in a very reasonable time frame. What another attorney had worked on for over 2 years John settle one case in less than 6 months and another in less than a year. I would highly recommend this great attorney! He and his staff were very caring and concerned about my health and well being. Many thanks for a job well done. He won both cases for me and prices and rates were fantastic. ( I actually got more money than the attorney did). Highly recommend him and again Thank you John Campbell for your great service and support.

I hired John Campbell, He appeared to be taking my data and making reviews and getting ready for court. He didn't even give any of the stuff to the judge. I gave detailed financial data with every last transaction to him for more than 1 1/2 years only to have to get him to deliver it to the judge in court at lunch time. He didn't give the judge any data about my ex's misdeeds, he didn't even counter illegally obtained evidence until I demanded he do it. The other attorney brought into court stolen cell phone data obtained by spy device and such and which was agreed that he would be disbarred if he brought it in and then my attorney did nothing. John Campbell wouldn't file motions for contempt on violation of Pendente Lite which included nearly 2 years of unbelievable harassment of myself. I repeatedly demanded he do this and basically got told no. He took vacation to go see his girlfriend which cost me a delay of 6 months on the case and over $35,000 in expenses. He wouldn't even file one motion for my benefit during his time. He didn't support proof of affair of my ex. He didn't even make attempt when requested in court to consult with him. I actually sat there and asked to speak to him and he wouldn't do it. All he did is run up a massive bill in excess of $30,000 and resulted in nothing for me.

He was very curtiuos. He always was on time. And the main thing for me was he always found loopholes where the patrol officers violated my rights. He got mine thrown out. Thank you!!!!

I consulted Mr.Tewalt on my husbands immigration case. He was kind and patient and listened to all the facts of the case. When I finished, Mr.Tewalt helped us find a solution at no cost. He did not charge a consultation fee as promised and refused to take payment for his service. A truly honest attorney is hard to find. I have been to many attorneys for this case and he was the only one who refused to just take a retainer and get back to me.

We were very pleased with Mr. Howie. Every phone call or email was answered in a very timely manner. He laid out all the options and kept us from going to trial. He is a tough negotiator and will fight for you. We got the best possible outcome that we could have hoped for and certainly recommend him for any criminal charge that someone may be dealing with. Thank you Mr. Howie!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Huntsville, Alabama?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
