Sarah Meigs has been defending my sons and I for 3 years seemingly non stop over multiple cases, depositions, and trials. Answered now 1000s of questions, gotten my children back in the state, returns emails, and treats me with the upmost respect. She is not only a fantastic lawyer, but great council as well. I will not hesitate to lean on her expertise, grace, and experience in the future to defend my son’s rights for access to their father. I owe her and the rest of the staff at Amy Slayden Law a great debt of gratitude for my wonderful life with my sons while defending my peace with them over and over from constant litigation from multiple much more costly lawyers. She truly is a great human first and a respectful lawyer second. No games, no nonsense, and doesn’t believe she has to be hostile and disrespectful to be a great lawyer. Truly a credit to her profession.

Big mistake hiring this law firm. My case was stretched out for a very long time, a lot longer than it should have. Ended up with a horrible settlement after being assured that wouldn’t happen and paying a huge amount of money. This firm only cares about how much they can bill you for, not in trying to help their clients.

I obtained and required the services of Amy A. Slayden Family Law over the past 2 years, specific to a divorce. I interacted with everyone in the office at one point during this process and have a single phrase for the team: top-notch professionals! Throughout my divorce Amy and her team were there guiding me through the numerous challenges that come with this process. I found everyone exceptionally knowledgeable and responsive. This was such a stressful time in my life, but Amy and her team set me up for success. Amy really listened to my goals and concerns. She helped me set realistic expectations and priorities. Her knowledge on Family Law was evident in every discussion and interactions we had. I felt confident and supported with Amy and her team in my corner. Regardless of the Family Law issue you may find yourself confronted with, I strongly encourage you to meet Amy, Sarah, Dawn and Hannah.

He was very curtiuos. He always was on time. And the main thing for me was he always found loopholes where the patrol officers violated my rights. He got mine thrown out. Thank you!!!!

I consulted Mr.Tewalt on my husbands immigration case. He was kind and patient and listened to all the facts of the case. When I finished, Mr.Tewalt helped us find a solution at no cost. He did not charge a consultation fee as promised and refused to take payment for his service. A truly honest attorney is hard to find. I have been to many attorneys for this case and he was the only one who refused to just take a retainer and get back to me.

Amy is amazing! Legal matters can be very scary for some. Amy, however, put me at ease and boosted my confidence in the outcome of my case being the best thing for parties involved. She took the time to hear me out and understand where I was coming from, but she didn't sugarcoat anything or tell me what I wanted to hear just to win my business. In fact, her candor is what won my trust and I'm so glad I put my trust in her. She delivered! I counted on her and she did not fail me. Amy will always be my go to. I have complete confidence in her and highly recommend her.

Ms Amy Slayden and Sarah Meigs represented me during my contested divorce and ran circles around the other attorney. This awesome team was able to get my case settled without even having to go to court. They had my case taken care of during mediation and never had to see a judge or courtroom. I was beyond amazed at the way they represented me and ensured that my wants, needs and concerns were taken care of. I would highly recommend these ladies for any family law matter. If you are needing an attorney for Family Law and do not make this office your first call, you will be making a very big mistake. Thanks again to my attorneys!!

My family worked with Sarah Meigs an Attorney with Amy Slayden Family Law, we were extremely happy with Sarah's experience and knowledge. She helped us get a custody battle dismissed and communicated with us over weekend and evenings, and did what it took to get the job done. We are extremely grateful to her and I would recommend her service to anyone needing help.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Huntsville, Alabama?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
