My dad and I hired Mr. Holberg to handle my mom's estate after another attorney walked away from the bar and many cases. It was a mess and something that should have been handled over a year ago. He listened, provided a clear strategy to fix the errors from the previous attorney, and was responsive. I never thought I'd be so thankful to have a responsive attorney, but it's SUPER important. I'd hire Mr. Holberg again and highly recommend his services to others.

After reaching out to more than 4 attorneys to help with a complicated , 100 year old land deed which needed a cleared title, I was wholly discouraged. Each professional from whom I sought help barely listened to the facts of my story as they quickly surmised that the work required to clear this title would outweigh what they could charge to do it. But then I found Mike! Mike returned my phone call with only a few moments before the close of the business day, on the eve of his birthday. Due to my previous experiences and the late hour, I expected to hear yet another rushed excuse for not taking up my case. But to my delight, Mike listened to the details of my heirloom property. He asked questions, paused often in thought. He was actually contemplating solutions! In this initial conversation, he went straight to work at his computer all the whole asking deeper questions and contemplating possible roadblocks. He pulled up some details about the plot. He checked the assessors database and looked for local title companies who might provide us with other details needed before any real legal work could begin. And all of this effort within a few moments of chatting with me! What a kind and sympathetic gentleman. Here was a man who was truly passionate about his profession. He seems to truly enjoy the work of untying legal knots simply for the challenge of it, the satisfaction of solving a puzzle just because it was intriguing. Where the other lawyers spoke first about payment and money, Mike spoke first about the specific legal processes required, and considerations that might make things tricky, like any good craftsman does when assessing a project. I was delighted to find this rare gem who defies all the lawyer stereotypes of being cold and greedy. I am looking forward to his help resolving my legal matter. If you are tired of fruitless legal consults, I would encourage you to reach out to Mike. Though he may not be able to solve your specific legal issue, I can promise that he will take the time to educate and empower you so you can better pursue resolution.

Attorney Holberg is truly a praiseworthy lawyer. He is knowledgeable, intelligent, confident, and passionate about his client’s cases. He is honest and direct about the bounds of his area of practice and expertise and willing to refer you to a specialized attorney to assist if needed. This team approach shows integrity and a commitment to the overall success of your case and your individualized needs. I especially appreciated him effectively explaining my options and key strategies for my case. He worked hard to gather information and research to enhance the options and strategies he proposed. Beyond being a highly skilled and extremely knowledgeable lawyer, Attorney Holberg exhibits rare vesting in his clients that puts you at ease about knowing that your case will be handled fully, professionally, and right the first time. I highly recommend Attorney Holberg and his law firm to my family and closest friends. In my experience, he was able to provide a level of service far greater than standard law firms. Attorney Holberg and his staff always responded to me in a professional and timely manner. He was thorough, strategic, empathetic, and personable. Attorney Holberg took the time to hear all of my concerns and clearly and concisely outlined all the different courses of action, including the positives and negatives of each choice. I felt empowered and encouraged. He resolved my problem quickly. I could not have asked for better representation. Working with Attorney Holberg was incredibly easy and the least stressful part of a very difficult situation. Without hesitation, I give Attorney Holberg my highest recommendation.

He seems to be a good lawyer. Never went to court yet. So, I guess I'll let you know whenever we go to court.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Mobile, Alabama?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
