Where do I begin? Excellent representation. When you are a man going into family court to defend yourself against modifications to child support or ask for more custody, you can assume you are fighting an uphill battle. There are too many laws that do not take into consideration what good fathers do. Who wants to document every single detail of fatherhood to prove yourself? Well, I wanted the best representation I could find no matter what it costs or how far I had to travel. After doing my research, The Morris Firm was the clear winner. However, I still did not expect the quality of service that I received. I know lawyers cannot guarantee results, but this attorney is fast and fierce, and I am sure that the opposing counsel did not want to go to trial with this guy. First, when you retain an attorney, it is always best to hire someone that only does that area of law. Second, when you do the consultation and determine that the attorney has a personal passion for the area, hire them. You cannot buy passion and you cannot learn it in law school. Third, when you are dealing with your life you must sacrifice to get the best. His work ethic, thoroughness, professionalism, preparation, and trial strategy are all unmatched. Do not try to get a budget lawyer that practices everything. He or she will not do the research and has not kept up with the law and cases, and he or she does not have the specific experience of an attorney that practices one area of law. When I saw my first brief, it frightened me. I actually was thinking that we should ease up a little. He is very serious about giving the best offense and defense legally possible. And Elizabeth Morris is the best. She makes you feel like family and steps out front with skill and expertise. I will keep this short, but I really recommend The Morris Firm for any family court cases that he covers. I’d say he’s the best at this. And men need expert counsel in today’s legal system. Anything less would be asking for trouble that will last a long time.

Jon did excellent work on my case! Due to a change of personal circumstances, I needed to modify child support. My ex spouse insisted that any attempts to modify child support would lead to an increase in payments, which sounded outrageous to me as they were already higher than I could reasonably afford. So I retained Jon for legal assistance, and he ultimately negotiated much more favorable terms for me. Thank you!

Words can’t explain what John Morris has done for me and the relief and blessings he has created for my life. I got married at a young age and found out my wife cheated on me. I decided to leave only to find out she’s pregnant. Me and her didn’t work out and from that moment on hell began. I could never see nor talk to my son unless it was on her terms and conditions which were always slim to none. It killed me having to watch my son grow up through Facebook. I tried several times to reason with her and she would always say off the wall things to me like, “go have another one and start a new life.” After 6 years pass I get the courage to step out on faith and try to get some legal help. After one consultation with John I knew he was my God appointed lawyer. To say the least the woman I married and wanted so badly to divorce tried to hurt me in every way possible and didn’t care that it was hurting our son in the process. Not only did she give me a hard time she even gave John a hard time and showed her true colors to him several times. She tried to create every reason under the sun on reasons why I couldn’t see my boy. It amazed me at how John knew exactly what motions to file and how to handle someone who sought so badly to hurt the father of their child, someone who begged and pleaded to be there but for her own selfish reason denied it every time. He helped me through it all while fighting with me but also giving me reassurance and confidence. My journey has ended and my praise report is with God and Johns knowledge I got exactly what I asked for and what God saw fit , joint custody with ample amount of court scheduled timing, 0 arrears, and a manageable child support amount. I can not express enough what John did for me and my son. I was weak and ready to give up. If you are looking for someone willing to listen and truly help as long as you do your part John Morris is your man !!!!!!!!

I hired Jon off a recommendation and because he was a for fathers rights attorney. Jon was very nice when we spoke. I explained my situation and he said he thought he could help. My ex wife had went to the judge behind my back and raised child support along with being awarded $4,500 in her lawyers and I lost some of my visitation time with my boys. I told Jon that her lawyer was the retired district attorney with the county we were having court in and was going to be fighting tooth and nail. Jon said he wasn’t scared and thought we had a good chance to win and overturn the order that had been placed without my knowledge. Jon wrote an excellent motion that I was very impressed with. We went to court and Jon presented well and we won our case. Jon was also flexible with me and payments to him because he knew I was on a budget and didn’t want to put me in the poor house to represent me. Overall I’m very pleased with Jon and would highly recommend him.

Allen Sheehan did an excellent job in preparing me for my case. He took his time to explain every detail and made sure that I understood before moving forward. He has so much compassion and understanding, I never felt judged. Julie, his legal assistant, was very knowledgeable about anything and everything and was always so helpful. I was impressed by how quick emails, phone calls, etc. were returned by both of them. I was completely satisfied with my experience and would highly recommend them to anyone needing representation!

Russ Russell and Allen Sheehan are top-drawer attorneys. I had a nightmare of an issue that they were able to bring to a successful conclusion. They work together extremely well and are very adept at navigating thru our byzantine civil legal system. I'm not sure the language exists that adequately expresses my gratitude for their expertise and their unfailing support thru this ordeal. If you have a legal issue and want it handled correctly, either one of these guys will get it done for you.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Montgomery, Alabama?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
