Following my arrest I didn’t know what to do or where to look for legal help. I called many lawyers and none were of help or would even talk to me. James Christie gladly was a complete different story. He gave me great advice and unfolded the reality of how my case could go. His trustworthiness showed quickly in the quick 10 minute phone call and I instantly knew he would be the best option for me. Putting my trust into him, my case against me for DUI was dismissed. He has continued to answer any and all questions with the upmost professionalism. Truly the best lawyer and I would recommend him to anyone who finds themselves is a similar situation as myself.

I consulted Mr. Christie for legal advice because the attorney I had on retainer was not capable of handling my complicated cases and I had reached out to a couple of other attorneys who declined to take my case due to the complex nature. Mr. Christie agreed to take my case and was immediately able to make progress. He crafted a plan to resolve my cases to the best possible outcome. There were hurdles along the way and Mr. Christie was able to work through him using astute legal knowledge and his brilliant understanding of the Alaska Court System. I can't imagine where I would be had I not contacted Mr. Christie and I only wish I would have done so earlier. He is intelligent and well spoken and he truly cares. He could have easily settled for a less satisfactory outcome but he never gave up and worked relentlessly to succeed in resolving my cases. Mr. Christie deserves the highest recommendation and I am truly appreciative of the assistance he provided.

Several months ago I was super surprised and disconcerted to find myself in a legal situation I had not anticipated and had no experience with. Instant panic and worst-case-scenario thinking ensued and my mind scrambled as to how I was going to handle and fix this (and what if I couldn’t?!). The next thought in between the bad thoughts: James Christie.  I grew up in Anchorage and still live here and as anyone who has lived in one place for a long time experiences - there are certain names that come to be known as the go-tos in town should one be in need - whether in regards to a broken leg or an engine repair or the law - there are folks who are known in their respective fields for being: fair to both their clients and co-workers, well-versed and practiced, still curious and passionate about their professions, respected by their colleagues, and absolutely committed to doing right by their clients and always to the best of their abilities. James is one of those go-to folks.  My case was probably pretty boring compared to most of what comes across James' desk, but he made me feel like it was his only case. In spite of only a few days notice, by the time we did the run-through of his and opposing counsel’s line of potential questions, it was obvious he couldn’t have been more committed or well-informed as to the particulars of my case. Sure, I was still nervous as you-know-what going into court and having to deal, but the fact of having the representation I did made a huge psychological and emotional difference. Ultimately my case was dismissed because the other side didn’t show up. While ecstatic for that outcome, I have to admit I’m a bit melancholy having missed the for sure mess James would have made of their claims and witness. I’m thankful to have this experience in the past but two take-aways have stayed with me: 1) should I ever need a lawyer in the future there is no doubt I would again retain James Christie and 2) at one point during our prep work I asked James what he liked most about his job. His answer: helping people. Not the money, not the office view, not the courtroom battle. I respect James for being a fabulous lawyer, but it also feels pretty awesome to be able to admire your attorney for being a good person.

I couldn't have felt anymore ashamed. I spoke with James and he laid it out for me. It wasn't going to look good BUT he would do his best. He was amazing, he saw so many cracks in my case and did so much research that when he talked with the prosecuter even they had to agree. So what we thought doesn't usually happen, did, and I was given a second chance. I would strongly recommend James Christie if you need a criminal attorney!!

Michael guided me through a volatile divorce with child custody issues, and for years after with support and modification orders. His calm demeanor and encyclopedic knowledge of the law truly made the process very approachable for a client like me with no experience with any kind of legal matter. I am forever grateful for Michael's expert counsel and wholeheartedly recommend him to anyone that is looking for a true professional to help them navigate the emotionally charged waters of a divorce.

Sam just did my custody agreement case. He was patient through the process, when there was a lot of back and forth and changing things. I had never done custody or anything to do with the courts before and was frazzled about it all, he walked me through everything and kept me on track. Told me all my options and possibilities. I am overall happy with and thankful for the work he has done and recommend him!

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Anchorage, Alaska?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
