Best attorney ever! I had a horrible experience with my hoa not releasing old liens and double billing during litigation. We went back and forth for 13 years until I hired Jonathan Dessaules as my hoa attorney within 2 months my liens were released and my ledger was zero. I highly recommend any issues you may have with your hoa hire him do not try to fight on your own the laws are easily mis leading hard to understand he knew every law Jonathan was able explain why it was not right to me and he was able to have it cleared up fast. I had an almost 6000 ledger go to zero for my family to truly start fresh! I wish I found him in 2010 would have saved me so much more.

From onset to resolution, Jon oversaw my case and stepped in as needed to mentor the team. Jon as a seasoned expert naturally gravitates to the heart of the matter and brilliantly deduces strategy or on-the-spot follow up questions within depositions and court proceedings. I certainly see Jon as the honorable judge earning the respect of the court, his peers, and his clients. While I am veteran, this is the first time that I felt I had a guardian and for that, Jon, you have my heartfelt gratitude.

Our HOA sued us over our addition due to a setback violation. We had never had to retain a lawyer before in our lives and suddenly we were in a panic. We contacted Jon Dessaules from Dessaules Law Group and from the first conversation we knew we had come to the right place. Jon knew from experience the possible outcomes and walked us through what would most likely happen. Before our initial conversation, Jon took the time to review the facts about the case and various documents we had provided. We had interviewed 3 other law firms and even started down the road with one of them. The experience with Dessaules Law was night and day. We saw immediate results and even saw a difference in how our HOA began treating us. The HOA went from being arrogant, standoffish, and demanding we tear down our addition to back channeling for a settlement. Jon and his team gave clear answers to our questions and provided straight forward guidance on the best way to proceed with the case. When we gave suggestions or feedback it was incorporated where appropriate. Dessaules Law handled our case in Tucson flawlessly (even though they are 2 hours away in Phoenix). We began the case worried we would have to tear down our entire addition and start over. We ended with a settlement where we did not have to change a thing. We couldn’t be happier with Dessaules Law and Highly recommend them.

Mr. Dessaules and his team (in addition to Jonathan: Douglas and Hilary have also been exceptionally helpful) have provided me with patient, timely, responsive, highly-competent, skilled, and fairly-priced representation. I am a licensed AZ attorney who practices in a very different area of law and came to a point where I found myself far outside my professional realm of comfort, requiring assistance relating to a personal and emotional HOA problem, which necessitated that I secure retention of an attorney with substantial experience dealing in plaintiff HOA issues & real estate law. I conducted some basic solo research via the trusty Google machine to find the right person to help me, ultimately identifying, requesting assistance from, then retaining Mr. Dessaules. Prior to discussing my specific problem with him then seeking his engagement, I did not know him, his firm, or the reputations of either. I found myself in a rather embarrassing professional place: in a position where I felt it necessary to ask another local attorney with whom I was not familiar to professionally represent me because I required help with a situation that was outside my scope of expertise. This was not a professional favor or courtesy; I approached him as a stranger/hopeful client who needed help and he and his staff immediately acknowledged my announced embarrassment, very casually minimized it to make the situation easier for me, and carried me through, achieving a better outcome for me than I had hoped for from the outset. The situation was emotional for me so I must shamefully admit that Mr. Dessaules had to deal with a bad/emotional client at times. Throughout, (and unlike me) Mr. Dessaules never lost composure or professionalism but stayed the course, responding on weekends and evenings, while working to negotiate the best possible outcome for me, treating me with respect, very timely attention and response, and ultimately negotiated a better outcome for me than I even hoped for or requested upon engaging him. Mr. Dessaules has handled my representation with exceeding professionalism and grace. I regard him and his team as highly-skilled within their HOA/real estate area of specialty, which represents the limit of my experience with him and his firm. I admire and respect Mr. Dessaules and his firm's professionalism, work product, and find his billing practices to be uncommonly fair. Fan for life. I have proudly referred him to two people requiring assistance with real estate/HOA representation and as a similarly-situated professional working within an adjacent sandbox, he is, without hesitation, the go-to plaintiff HOA or real estate litigation attorney specialist based on my personal experience with another professional with whom I share a the same licensure.

I’m 74 years old, a property owner since 1971 and have dealt with real estate attorneys in Idaho and Arizona. To make a long story short … wish we would have meet years earlier. Jonathan and Jacob both represented me with several HOA matters. Butted heads a bit but took the time to straighten me out to best understand the law and the process. Became very evident they had our best business interests in mind. During court proceedings, I was absolutely awestruck with the knowledge of the cases and how it was represented. Awesome!!!!

My husband and I did our wills with Bethany and we were very pleased with the service. Bethany took the time to walk us through each document and was very patient and answered any questions that we had in a way that was very easy for us to understand. She was flexible, responsive, and kept on top of us to ensure we were completing the documents timely. She is also very affordable. I would definitely work with Bethany again.

mrs. Jacobs was my attorney for several corporation formations, small legal issues, and estate planning. From my will and trust, to a simple demand letter, to representing my small business corporation she was there when I had questions, fought for me when I needed it, and provided the legal guidance using everyday language without sounding too legalese. Her rates are reasonable (her estate planning isn't much more than the do it yourself stuff available) and she always made me feel like an important client. Highly recommended.

Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Phoenix, Arizona?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
