I consulted with Megan on a probate issue regarding my deceased grandmother's home. Megan provided excellent advice, and was very helpful. She was able to help solve the issue so the property could be sold. I would recommend Megan to anyone seeking assistance with probate.

My son in law is semi retired lawyer in another firm but referred me to Biven and Associates nearly ten years ago for my mom who needed long term care. I then needed assistance for my significant other with his estate and I then had the pleasure to meet Megan Selvey. She helped me through a difficult time, numerous phone calls and meetings with family members until his recent passing. Megan is smart, caring and professional with genuine concern for her clients welfare. She goes beyond in her duties and is always available to take a call. I have referred friends and family to her and continue a business relationship with BIVENS and Associates. Megan is an asset to the company and I consider her a friend and my go to person for any legal issue.

Megan Selvey was referred to us by our daughter. Upon consulting her for our services, we found her professional and very informative about our legal needs. She was not forceful in her methods and only offered us what we required. In addition, she provided the services we required in a timely fashion. I would and have highly recommended Ms. Selvey to anyone seeking her services!

My mother was diagnosed at a young age with Fronto-Temporal Dementia, and I had to seek out legal counsel to gain custody of her as well as handle all of her medical needs/bills, and housing requirements. I entered a prolonged legal battle with her family, and initially hired another lawyer who failed to show for court hearings, never responded to urgent emails for months on end and ultimately landed me in the hospital due to stress before the judge recommended I obtain new legal counsel. Enter Megan Selvey and the wonderful lawyers/legal assistants/paralegals/EVERYONE at Bivens & Associates!! Megan and Eileen walked me through every step of the process, helping me set up accounts to ensure my mother's health and housing was guaranteed for as long as need be. They helped to clear up the horrific mess my previous 'lawyer' had made of all her funds and assets and even helped me regain most of the funds he had stolen from my mother (yeah, he was a real swell guy). The only reason we did not regain all of the funds was because I determined it was not worth the time and money to regain the remainder, being exhausted from years of battling my former lawyer. I have no doubt that had I chosen to pursue it, Megan would have regained every last penny for me. Everyone at Bivens & Associates was extremely sympathetic to everything I was going through emotionally with my mother's failing health and eventual passing and everything I had gone through with my previous lawyer, and offered me nothing but the most wonderful patience and support, giving me the time and space needed to obtain any necessary paperwork. Whenever possible, Megan would handle the obtaining and/or submission of documents for me so that I did not have to deal with any additional stress. After my mom's passing, she helped me to finalize everything and close everything out, so that I didn't have to worry about anything popping up down the road. I can rest easy knowing that, with the help of Megan Selvey, I did everything in my power to give my mother the best final years of her life, safe and cared for and never in any doubt as to her financial stability. In a nightmarish stage of my life, Megan Selvey and the amazing folks of Bivens & Associates were the ray of light and hope that kept me going, and helped me get through what would have otherwise been a hopeless, impossible situation. I cannot express enough gratitude for the devotion, kindness, support, and legal expertise I received from Megan. She truly changed my view on lawyers and gave me the best legal experience I have ever received in my years of dealing with various lawyers. I would highly, HIGHLY recommend anyone seeking legal help with elder law/estate planning seek out the services of Megan. The stress of helping an elder family member is already enough; working with Megan will alleviate so much of the legal stress, allowing you to devote more of your time and energy to the people you love. Because when you're dealing with a family member at the end of their life, the last thing you want is to spend their remaining time dealing with lawyers, courts, and banks. Megan will help you manage things so that you can have quality time with your loved ones when it is so, so important.

Colin is so much more than just a "Family Law Lawyer". He is an extremely kind and empathetic human being. He said my situation was "unique" but because of his knowledge of the law he was able to help me and my son. He is honest and explained everything in a way I completely understood. I was never left with the feeling of anything but complete understanding. I knew exactly what was happening and why and what to expect next. Never a moment spent wishing i would have asked him something, except maybe how was his day going............... I will, without a doubt, never forget everything he has done and all the knowledge he has shared to make this nightmare become just another part of my journey through life.

I contacted the law firm to help yes with an emergency situation with our son. Alan was so helpful and was able to work us in the next morning. He is very easy to talk to, knowledgeable, and worked very quickly on our case. He’s very easy to get in contact with and answered our calls, that has never happened with attorneys I've hired in the past. I would highly recommend Alan, I can’t say enough good things about him.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Scottsdale, Arizona?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
