Getting a phone call in the middle of the night to say our son had been arrested has got to be, hands down, the worst day of our lives. My son was charged with felony drug charges and we thought his life was over. My family and I were very naïve to all things LAW. If you're looking for a defense lawyer, you may feel like you're up against a wall (even if you haven't done anything wrong!). I certainly know I did. Being that I'm typically not involved with the legal system, I had my fears. All you need to do is Google "can a detective lie to a suspect" to see what kind of tactics can be used against you once you are considered a "suspect". And then I called Mr. Michael Harwin. Unlike the stereotypical view that people have about lawyers, Michael is a real person. He cares about people. He cared about helping me and my family. And although you may be going through some tough times, he's got an incredible sense of humor which allows you to step back and laugh at the pain (if you choose to do so). And he gives hope. I didn't like the situation I was put in, but Michael was there every step of the way to encourage me, and eventually helped me get out of the situation. My son was charged with Criminal Damage resulting from an automobile accident. Allegations related to drug use were involved. I was asked for help in hiring an attorney. Unfortunately I live out of state and have no familiarity with Tucson lawyers. I do however have a law degree and know what to look for and what questions to ask when hiring an attorney. Three critical areas immediately come to mind - competence, integrity and communications. The last, communications, was crucial due to the long distance relationship about to be started. Michael excels in all three and also has a fourth quality which serves his clients well - compassion! Prior to speaking with him, I checked Michael's rating in Martindale Hubbel to see what his peer group thought of him. He has an exemplary rating. With that information in hand, I called and spoke with him. He had none of the arrogance often found in highly rated attorneys. Quite the opposite. He was gracious, engaging and focused on the problem at hand. After our conversation, I was convinced that Michael was the best choice in Tucson to handle my son's case. Just to be sure, two other criminal defense were also interviewed. Michael and his staff thoroughly investigated the charges and the evidence. If found guilty, my son faced a possible multi-year sentence. Rather than go to trial, Michael was able to negotiate a deal with the District Attorney resulting in a 6 month sentence for which my son was incarcerated for about 3 months. Our family viewed this outcome as a major success, a definite win! Remember that fourth quality I mentioned earlier, compassion? That played a significant role in the process. My son surrendered himself and was taken into custody 2 months prior to his sentencing hearing. During that time, aside from communicating with the family, he made a special effort to provide guidance to my son's spouse who had no one else to turn to. That showed me a lot. I am convinced without a doubt that Michael was the best choice. While I normally refrain from granting endorsements, I happily make an exception in this case.
