I don't know what would I have done without Ms Valdivia's aggressive and steady legal support. In a few words, she saved me from unjustice, she took me from a puddle of mud and put me in a safe shore. I am American citizen who was living abroad, when I reached out to her and explained my legal issue. She didn't hesitate to represent me. My case was VERY complex involving false but serious accusations of kidnapping, among other things. Because of Ms Valdivia, I was able to SUCCESSFULLY resolve ALL of my legal issues in a long battle of child custody, divorce, and false accusations. From the bottom of my heart, and as a member of the legal community myself, I HIGHLY recommend Ms Valdivia as a lawyer. Her kindness as well as her knowledge and strategic defense is a successful formula that will benefit you. Thank you Ms Valdivia for ALL you did for me and my children.

I have nothing but praise for both Attorneys Michael Iaria and Annamarie Valdivia! They worked in collaboration to help me petition for the Governor’s Pardon – and did so successfully! I want to give God the utmost praise for the great blessing of leading me to these two talented and hardworking lawyers, and for the favor of the Governor’s pardon itself. Because of this, I am free today. Not only me, but my entire family. This most recent Fourth of July is our first when words like “freedom” and “independence” have really meant something to each of us. Below I want to briefly enumerate my thanks to each lawyer. What my family and I appreciate about Atty. Iaria is his honesty, fairness (especially in the fees he charged), and reliability. When we called with questions or just wanted to talk over a process, he always answered right away. He would even answer when we would call him at night, or he would call us back after office hours. With so much of the process that I didn’t understand, I really appreciated knowing that I was working with a lawyer who made a point about making himself available to and reachable by his clients. He is thorough not only in matters of paper work but also in following up with people! As for Atty. Annamarie, she was remarkably friendly, positive, easy to talk to and therefore easy to relate to. She helped me throughout the whole process, and especially during my nerve-racking court hearing in Olympia. She was genuinely passionate about helping me and my family, and this showed in the way she stayed in the courtroom with us, waiting for hours for our turn to arrive. Over and above this, her genuine care showed in the way she related to me not just as a client but as another woman. She shared enough about herself and her background to let me and my family know that we were in good, capable, and caring hands. When approaching Atty. Valdivia with questions, I never felt worried or intimidated because she was consistently attentive. Sometimes, I had questions I didn’t know how to phrase, and she would still “hear” me. She really listened! She answered my questions and concerns kindly and, when she missed my calls, she called back right away. Overall, she is the best lawyer I could have worked with, and am confident she could help so many other women with special cases like mine. I am so grateful to Attorney Iaria and Valdivia for helping us fight – and win – this great battle. Other lawyers I consulted with easily dismissed my case as hopeless or too difficult. I heard over and over that it would be a “long shot.” However, from the start, Atty. Iaria and Atty. Valdivia focused only on making this long shot hit target. They did an incredible job together! I praise God for the kind of people that they are, for the challenge they confidently rose to, and for the passion they have in helping deliver justice – no matter how great the odds. I know that my Lord and Savior Jesus could not have placed me in better hands!

Calm, consistent, and receptive to facts and insight even late in the process. A deceptively low key demeanor in court allows Goncalves to position his questions and evidence where they do the most for a client. A study in "less is more" in cross combined with a sense of wonder about facts conveyed to the jury at closing makes Walter perhaps one of the most lethal trial lawyers currently working in Pima county if not the south west today. This tremendous trial capability is built on a stoic foundation and no-nonsense pre-trial preparation regimen that informs his client and constantly reassesses the facts and discovery as the client becomes more "legal literate". Under Goncalves's guidance, the client becomes empowered, learning to consider and contribute facts in a rational constructive manner and move beyond the early panic of arraignment. Quite simply the best defense lawyer in Tucson that money could buy, if he wasn't working for the public defenders office. The Pima county DA's office can only hope and pray that someone in the private sector will eventually headhunt Goncalves, until then they will continue to lose cases when Goncalves is retained for some broke defendant like myself. Acquittal, life and family saved.

Rebecca is such a wonderful person. She sincerely cares about her clients and fights for their rights. She listens and is always a phone call away. I would definitely recommend her for any juvenile matter or any other legal proceeding she would be willing to handle.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Tucson, Arizona?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
