I hired Ms. Lockwood, when my previous lawyer was just pocketing/swallowing my money and had no interest in my case. I really wish I met Ms. Lockwood sooner - then my case wouln't have become as chaotic and drawn out as it was, because Ms. Lockwood would've stayed on top of it from the get go. She was a God-sent at the 11th hour, and was able (and willing!!!) to turn things around for me in my case. She stood up for me even if it meant taking 'heat' from my previous and the oppositional lawyer. She listened carefully, believed in me, and came up with a perfect (!) and workable plan. She involved me 100% and worked nights and weekends if she had to. She made herself accessable and available, she responded to all my e-mails and text messages the same day, if not immediately. Ms. Lockwood is calm and collect, very professional, and extremely kind. You will not find another lawyer like her: she goes out of her way to make this experience as pleasant as it can be and always looks out for the best interest of the children involved and her clients.

This attorney was hired by myself and my wife in November, 2014 for a family court/custody issue. She is very timely in her responses to us as clients and makes all filing deadlines. She is very organized and does not have to repeatedly ask us for the same information. She is timely in communicating to us regarding responses and information presented to her by the opposing party. Her knowledge of family law is apparent. She lets us know she is available to us no matter how big or small our issues seem to be and gives a general feeling that she truly cares about the case and what is best for our children . She has demonstrated that she is trustworthy and takes special care to safeguard sensitive issues , such as requesting certain things involving our minor children not be published along with the court filings, which become available on the internet as public records. She literally thinks of everything she can do to assist and protect the kids and seems well versed in family law, as well as recent changes to the laws and specific court rulings setting new precedents

I was given Mrs. Lockwood's number by a friend. The best decision I could have ever made was giving her a call. I needed a court order for visitation clarified. Not only did she meet me after hours for my consultation, she actually stayed until all my questions and concerns were answered (over two hours) and that was before she even knew if I was going to use her. She told me my options, what the judge normally does in certain situations and made sure I was fully aware of what I was getting into. (Even if I didn't like legally what the options were). She put my mind at ease. She also cares about her clients. She gave me the strength not to allow the other parent to bully me into caving. She was by my side the whole way. Having her offer payment plans is a plus. I also like how she preps you and keeps you up to date. She sent an email anytime something was done with my case, whether it was filing, talking to the other person's lawyer, or waiting on a response, she always kept me up to date. I would recommend her to anyone and everyone. (I often do!)

Kaiser has been my lawyer since April. I just had my last court date, I went from looking at 10-life in the feds fentanyl charge, to a misdemeanor charge, with no time, no fine, no probation... He did his part plus some for me, and I truly couldn't be more satisfied with his work. Thank you Michael Kaiser!! And he wears cool shoes.

I can't thank Michael Kaiser enough for the incredible work he did on my nephew's case. Facing seven felonies and potentially years in jail, my nephew's situation seemed bleak. However, Mr. Kaiser worked his magic and managed to reduce the charges down to two misdemeanors. We are beyond grateful for this outcome, which has given my nephew a second chance at life. Michael Kaiser truly is the best in the business, and I wholeheartedly recommend him to anyone in need of legal representation. His expertise, dedication, and commitment to his clients are unparalleled. He was always a phone call away and never seemed impatient or annoyed throughout this entire process. Thank you so much, Mr. Kaiser for working a miracle!

Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Little Rock, Arkansas?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
