Dan fights hard for his clients and treats them as he would want to be treated. I relied on him and trusted him completely on every aspect of our case for legal advice. He is a fantastic resource and was always available for us in a moments notice. Having someone like Dan who has the knowledge and experience to navigate through the legal system was been invaluable to us and we will refer him to anyone that is in need. Thank you Dan for all of your hard work. You have been gifted with an ability to treat people respect and dignity… you are extraordinary.

I hired mr koukol at the last minute one day before my preliminary hearing after the judge had said absolutely no more continuing and he took the case also only making me pay half up front and a very reasonable rate and got it continued and I only had to go a few more times and it was dismissed. I didn't even have to goto my final hearing and if I wouldn't have hired him I believe k may have been convicted of something I didn't do. he was very supportive and has connections to the right people clearly. He's an excellent lawyer and a very nice person

Pros
1
Highly knowledgeable and experienced in the legal system
“He demonstrated an astoundingly comprehensive knowledge of the law, and calmly articulated a plan to approach the D.A.—utilizing well-established relationships and in-roads—with an arsenal in my favor well before the case ever went before a judge.”
2
Effective at achieving favorable outcomes for clients
“Dan made certain that screw-up didn't derail my life. I could have very easily gone to prison for my offenses. Yet, as it stands now I have to take a class twice a week—it's nothing short of remarkable.”
3
Compassionate and supportive towards clients
“The first thing Dan did was get me out of jail. He was able to convince the Judge that I was not a dangerous person and that I deserved to be trusted.”
4
Highly recommended by both clients and other legal professionals
“I would strongly and sincerely recommend Dan as one of the best criminal defense attorneys in the area.”
Cons
1
Potential for high legal fees
“Hired Dan, but discovered that I was obligated to stick w/ previous attorney after about a week. Informed Dan before 1st court appearance. I realized that a portion of the 5K retainer I paid would be charged for the limited services already rendered.”
2
Lack of transparency in billing
“However, when I asked for the balance, I was ignored for weeks. Finally, Mr K sent me an invoice for $5,200. All that was done on my case was ONE interview w/ a private investigator. The invoice he sent listed services redundantly like "interview w/ PI" "discussion w/ PI" "strategize w/ PI".”

A while back I was hit by a reckless driver on the freeway causing me to roll several times. The next day I had insurance companies calling me pressuring me into say how I felt. I didn't know what to say so I sought out representation. Over the course of my case, Mr. Maurer and his team handled everything from the smallest detail of the case to just "how are you today?" with the upmost care and attention. The entire process was stress free from the time they took over. I would receive updates consistently so I always knew the standings of the case. I hope I'm never in a situation where I need representation again but if I am he will be one of the first people I call.

Jordan expertly and successfully represented my 91 yr old father with a serious injury claim. He was compassionate and came to my father's home several times during the process. He was patient in explaining the legal aspects of the case. Jordan sent updates to me and my brother along the way and always kept us in the loop. Jordan has a good heart and demonstrated how much he cares for his clients. We can't thank Jordan enough for the time, effort and empathy he displayed towards my dad and resolving his case.

My daughter called me on a Friday with a very difficult situation. I walked her over to their office having utilized their services prior.. Chris was working on the case and set that aside taking the time to walk my daughter through her situation and assisted with getting paperwork drafted and drawn up. They were amazing and helped give her piece of mind over the weekend. Thank you very much Chris. Sincerely Kevin Letcher

It was a little intimidating when I went for my appointment to meet up with Chris. I felt Very comfortable I just wish I new what I needed to say and here for one hour of consulting. Time is expensive but I really think he would not waste any time at all and I wish I could afford him. Thanks Chris for your time

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the expected timeline for my case?

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Auburn, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
