Through my experience with Michael, he was easy to work with and affordable, compared to most lawyers. Goes with you with the process and what to expect. Would recommend.

I will start saying; hiring a lawyer is not always easy and end results are always painful and we most likely will not be happy. However, I want to start with thanking Michael for all his patience, guidance, understanding me through this hard 4 years that we worked together and all his hard work. We put a hell of a fight against a team that was dishonest, disorganized, and not well intended, but he always managed to keep me well-rounded in difficult times. Thankfully, I am pleased to say this chapter of my life is finally over and it is that time to move forward with life. Thank you Michael for everything and for your help on closing this painful chapter of my life. If you are looking for a professional, compassionate, and good guidance Michael Marquez will be the attorney for you.

What I really liked about Mike was that he was able to talk to me on my level about the legal process. Being able to easily communicate with him was very helpful and comforting throughout our work together. At the beginning, I was very nervous about going to court (even for a "simple" settlement) and his personable style made a big difference getting me started in the important steps I had to take. His professionalism and knowledge gave me confidence when in the courtroom, and after each step he would provide insights about the proceedings which I had not picked up. He was encouraging and offered great guidance on a range of issues. Mike always knew what to do, and yet never took action before I clearly understood and agreed on everything. I am very happy that I could work with Mike throughout the whole process, winning both my original case and a lengthy appeal by my opponents. In addition to getting what was owed to me, Mike also got back legal costs and fees from frivolous motions filed by the opposing side. Mike is a professional and he cares about his clients. He represented me as though he was representing himself.

Upon meeting Mr. Marquez, I was initially impressed with his genuine sense of interest and understanding in my dilemma (custody case). Without getting into too great of specifics; this review cannot possibly capture the intense level of professionalism, understanding, and caring he put into representing not just myself, but the interests of my children. He was in constant contact, bringing very effective, fluid communication to me at every possible juncture. Not only did he do a superb job of preparing my case; he went out of his way to ensure that I was completely comfortable before each hearing or event. Never have I felt so strongly represented by someone that so genuinely cared about the best interests of myself as his client; and more so - my children. His fee structure is more than reasonable; and the value of his services have long since far outweighed his fees. Because of the service he's provided, my relationship with my children has never been better. The time the children and I get to spend together is of the highest quality it's ever been. I can't begin to quantify the effect and impact his representation of me has had on our lives. I can't thank him enough, and would proudly endorse and recommend him to anyone in need of first rate representation.

Jim Laurie helped us with multiple projects in our North Carolina office, including a public building that delivered more than a year and a half late, and caused us extreme delay and disruption problems. Jim did a great job with our claims against the General Contractor and defending against the $900,000+ counterclaim that included liquidated damages. Paul Marotta is not your average lawyer because he actually cares about you and your case. He is a superb lawyer and a friendly guy. For my personal case, he fixed the problem I was in and even explained how to do it better the next time. If I ever need another corporate attorney, he'll be the first guy I go to.

I never a a need to an attorney until about 15years ago. Paula was not only direct, bold and fierce in my criminal defense, she was understanding, knew the law and fought for me like no one else. I can honestly say I would not be the person I am to without her knowledge, persistence, and drive. She changed my life for better and will never be able to thank her enough..

I FIRST HIRED PAULA BACK IN 1993 AND WE HAVE USED HER FOR SMALL CASES AND BIG CASES EVER SINCE. SHE HAS ALWAYS COME THROUGH AS SHE WAS ALWAYS PROTECTIVE OF US MUCH LIKE A BIG SISTER WOULD BE (ESPECIALLY WHEN OUR RIGHTS WERE SO CLEARLY VIOLATED). SHE MAKES PEOPLE CRY ON THE STAND FROM HER RELENTLESS CROSS-EXAMINATIONS AND SHE CAN BE LIKE A PITBULL..ONCE SHE LATCHES ON..SHE WILL NOT LET GO. AND IF YOU OWE HER MONEY FOR HER SERVICES...YOU SURE AS HELL BETTER PAY HER.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Burlingame, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
