It was nerve-wracking for me to go through the divorce process. I was having difficulty accepting and understanding why this happened but found calm with the help of Chelsea. Her thoughtfulness and sensitivity to my needs made me feel at ease and cope with what's in front of me, my daughter's emotional well being and what financial support was required for her and her mother. I followed and finished the recommended courses which expanded my understanding of my new life as a responsible father in a single parent household. Thank you for all you have done for me.

I have followed Chelsea on Instagram for over a year and love her relationship/prenup advice and education. I first purchased her Marry Me Smart course and then decided to use Chelsea to represent me as my partner and I drafted up our premarital agreement. At first I was anxious about the process but Chelsea is so knowledgeable and made the process easy, understandable and a positive experience. Thank you Chelsea for setting our relationship up for success!

Emily and Alex represented me during the development of my premarital agreement. I was under a time crunch and they both did quick and extremely thorough work. Emily and Alex were both very kind and I enjoyed working with them. I appreciated that they took the time to carefully explain various legal details. I hope I never need a family lawyer in the future, but if I did, I would absolutely work with them again!

Emily Hepner’s legal council was instrumental in helping me navigate a complex family legal issue, unfolding during possibly the most traumatic situation I’ve faced in life. She and her team provided timely, reliable, expertise that helped me make the best of a hard situation and came from a place of really understanding all the circumstances and nuances of my particular situation and concerns. I can’t recommend Hepner & Pagan enough.

This review is long overdue! I literally could not have survived my divorce without the Hepner & Pagan team. My only regret is not having them from the start. I was supported through the process by Chelsea, Emily and Alexandra, and each of them brought so much experience and care to my case; it felt seamless anytime one had to step in for the other. They were always two steps ahead, and I never had to remind them of the details of my case, they had them nailed down. I always felt like their number one goal was a favorable but fair outcome, always acting ethically and taking the high road, even when the other side went low. It never felt like it was just about “billable hours” for them, which is how I felt previously with other firms. I really appreciated the emphasis they put on mediation, when possible, and was impressed with their expertise in the courtroom; they had so much knowledge of the family court judges and court process, I always felt confident in their abilities when before the judge and up against opposing counsel. I highly recommend working with Hepner & Pagan, and I will definitely use them for my next divorce, hahaha (sense of humor still intact).

It is my distinct pleasure to highly recommend Janet Miller to any person wanting to establish a Special Needs Trust. Janet Miller is extremely professional in her client interactions and she is also very knowledgable and caring throughout the complex process. She understands the importance and sensitivity of what the client is trying to achieve. Janet was very patient with the 'numerous' questions I found myself wanting explained in detail, often again and again. When dealing with something as personal as this type of Trust you want someone who exhibits all the attributes that I have experienced while working with Janet Miller. In my own profession I have worked with numerous attorneys. I have regarded several as being very good in their area of expertise. It is my evaluation that Janet Miller is at the 'top of the list' in the area of Special Needs Trusts.

I have an adult deaf and special needs daughter. When I got divorced when she was 6, it was determined in our agreement that her father would continue with support payments even after she turned 18. Unfortunately, he did not honor our agreement. Janet was able to not only make him realize and hold true to his moral and financial obligation but was successful in getting back pay as well (without having to go to court). Additionally, she was always very responsive to my calls/emails.

Janet was fantastic to work with. She expertly guided us in setting up a special needs trust to support my mom's unique medical and legal situation. Janet took the time to understand our issue and provided a clear solution and worked quickly to do so. She explained our legal options in language we could understand and liaised with other attorneys to expedite the process. She was extremely responsive and easy to connect with. I would work with her again in a heartbeat. Thank you Janet!

I would like to highlight attorney Shepardsons attention to fact finding details and his extensive experience litigating successfully in a number of civil cases involving both large corporation entities and governmental agencies. I would highly recommend his law firm, he definitely has the best interest of his clients and has a vast knowledge of the law.

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Campbell, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
