Bernie is a very strong and "get to the point" attorney. He helped my family with a contested step- parent adoption case in which many others we consulted with were skeptical of. When we consulted with Bernie, he was very personable but was realistic with us and always honest. This steered us to hire him as our attorney. He and his paralegal, Debbie, were both amazing to work with, very patient when we had our worries, and always assured us that they would do the best they could but without making promises. They're confident and very knowledgeable people. Debbie prepared our documents very nicely and is very detailed; you can tell she pays great attention. She was very pleasant to work and communicate with. Bernie was very informative, always on top of the laws and knew exactly what he was doing. As clients of Bernie's, we noticed that he was very well respected by the court. He knew how to communicate with us without sugar coating and was very quick to share any information that came up. We hope that we won't need to contact Bernie and Debbie in the future but if issues or concerns were to come up, we won't hesitate to reach out. Thank you Bernie and Debbie for your amazing work. You're both very well informed, respected, and truly did not fail us.

Divorce is definitely a lot of low and high, and quite a roller coaster, especially when your ex wife is just a source of constant problems. I am glad I decided to hire Bernie as my lawyer: Bernie kept me on track and gave me a lot of advices, and explanations to understand the complex process and timelines. Divorce can be extremely frustrating especially with timeline moving really slowly and your lawyer have no control of it, but Bernie was always available to reply to my email when needed. Every court appearances with Bernie went really well, and it was good to see we were both in agreement and didn't need to discuss for a long time while my ex wife and her lawyer were so unprepared. Bernie made sure that we had the time to discuss everything before going to Court so we will be prepared. My divorce has been now finalized, and still need to go through various administrative paperworks: despite the fact that I was hoping for a slightly better outcome, when I step back and look at the agreement Bernie helped negotiate, I am really pleased. I was told that a good agreement doesn't please anyone and this is the case, but really with what's happening for me post divorce, the agreement we ended negotiating is quite good for me. Not only Bernie has been a great lawyer but I want to say that Debbie his paralegal assistant has been truly awesome all along. It's good to work with a solid team when going through such difficult time. So thank you Debbie for all your hard work too. I will definitely recommend Bernie for anyone in need of a good lawyer (and I have already done it for a friend who is going through a painful and long divorce)

Mr. Kempen knows family law and helped to settle my divorce case. He was professional throughout and the paralegal on his case was also very fast and detail oriented. Everyone working on this case was attentive and responsive to emails and helped me to ensure I understood facets of the law/case.

Bernie was recommended to me by a trusted friend during a very emotional and tumultuous time when I didn't trust anyone. I know I was not an easy client for Bernie, but he and his paralegal, Debbie, never gave up and did what they could to establish a trusting relationship so that we could move forward as fast as I'd allow. They always had my best interests and if I had listened to Bernie from the very beginning, they probably could have completed the entire divorce process in weeks. Bernie was always a straight shooter with me, and while at times I wished I had a little more "hand holding", in the end, he was always aware of the $$ and did whatever he could to be efficient and make sure I knew what I was entitled to. Debbie was amazing and so responsive. They were able to settle the case for me out of court, which is exactly what I was hoping for. I know they were wanting me to ask for more, but they remained respectful of my needs to complete this process as soon as possible and with as little animosity as possible as well.

Kimberly Leding is a wonderful attorney that listened to my concerns and was confident, positive and supportive. She made the experience one that I learned from. I have a new appreciation for a professional who puts in genuine effort as well as understands the unforeseen complications that can arise during a legal proceeding. Kimberly provided insightful information that helped me understand the legal process. She was always available and was consistently prepared when opposing counsel was not. She has acquired a lifetime client and respect and admiration for a job well done.

My husband and I hired Kimberly and her firm to assist us in getting a Contract canceled and return of funds. The firm, and Kimberly specifically, were very professional, prompt and on top of all issues that arose. I was never concerned that our case was on the back burner and all emails and calls were returned in a timely fashion. I would definitely contact Kimberly again if the need presented itself.

Kim Leding helped our family with the Conservatorship of my Sister. My sister has special needs and is not able to navigate everyday life on her own. We met with Kim who came highly recommended and she did NOT disappoint. She was so patient and kind with all of us. She took the time to explain everything to us even when we asked her the same questions 10 times LOL. Every year we have to file additional paperwork with the courts and Kim is always on top of it. If I could give her a 10 Star rating I would. Thank you Kim for taking such good care of us!!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Castro Valley, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
