My opinion: Ruben is more focused on his criminal cases than family law. If you are trying to get custody of your children please read this review. The facts: We hired Ruben to represent us for Child support and child custody of our two young children. After he helped us get support which is what he said he thought was “more important” we sought out legal custody of our children because we already had physical custody. After waiting nearly a year for Ruben to file for custody of our children (with several reminders from me to his staff) he told us that because of the length in time we (he) waited to file we may not be able to use the evidence we compiled against the mother of our children and that it may not be admissible in court. We already had full physical custody and we were going for full legal custody. He said he could get us legal custody with all the evidence we submitted and then when the court date came closer he said he didn’t know what he could get us, and that we may loose physical custody. We had mediation, and he did not prepare my husband for the meeting with the mediator, nor did he tell us it was an option for him to show up at mediation on our behalf. This caused more stress on my husband as the mediation was rushed and he was on his lunch break from work to try and manage it himself, which could have been avoided if Ruben had done his job. Ruben told us he would be prepared for our court date which had been continued for after mediation, then had his assistant Percilla call me the day before court to inform me he would need another continuance because he was wrapped up in a criminal trial. She offered to send another lawyer in his place, and never called back. My husband took a day off work to show up for court thinking another attorney would be in his place, however the court informed us that Ruben had already filled a continuance. After our unsatisfactory experience with Ruben we replaced Him with new attorney a week before our trial. When I called his office to request they send our forms to our new representation expedited (because we had one week before court) his assistant Cristina called me and told me it would take 48hours to provide the new attorney with all of our information and case file. His office then ignored our requests, and never sent the documents. If we hadn’t been prepared with copies of paperwork and proof for our hearing, he could have really damaged our case more than he already had. Our new attorney helped us get full physical and legal custody, using the same exact information that was given to Ruben. Please consider these facts before moving forward with Ruben Newell as your Family law attorney.
