I hired Nicole for a divorce case. The divorce was ultimately filed in a different jurisdiction so I didn't get to see the full process through with her and her team, but I greatly appreciated their expertise, professionalism, and empathy throughout my time working with them. With their help, I felt informed and prepared to navigate the challenges of the divorce process. While I hope I never need these types of services again, I would definitely hire Nicole if I did and will recommend her as a resource for anyone I know who needs a good family law attorney!

Nicole was the right choice to handle my recent divorce proceeding. She was professional all the way through and I am very happy with the results of my case. She took charge from the beginning and although we were on opposite sides with an attorney, a forensic accountant and an ex-husband who wanted to challenge our positions every step of the way, Nicole did not back down ever and always fought for me to get me the best result possible. She did not sugarcoat anything - she explained my positions from a legal standpoint and if the laws were not on my side on a particular issue, she explained why. She is extremely thorough in her preparations and was always several steps ahead of the opposing counsel, which worked to our advantage. I wanted to get through the process as quickly as possible and I provided everything in a timely manner and Nicole and her team took it from there. I felt that we were a team working toward the same goal and we settled the case in about a year. There was never a time when I was waiting on her to get something done; Nicole was always on top of things and always returned calls or responded to emails quickly and efficiently. Nicole is very knowledgable about family law and really understands the legal environment in Orange County. During my case, she moved from a larger firm to a smaller, boutique family law practice as a partner. She explained her decision to do this as her wanting to have a better ability to serve her clients in the most favorable way possible, and I did find this to be the case after she made the transition. Nicole makes sure that whoever is assisting her in her practice is competent and professional. I was referred to Nicole through a family member who knows her from her work on the Orange County Bar Assoc. Ethics Committee. When opposing counsel or my ex became combative, Nicole firmly pointed out our positions, backing her assertions with facts based in law, and never tolerated disrespect or unethical behavior on the part of opposing side. She always handled any conflict with a firm understanding of the law, and a high standard of ethics. The opposing side knew that she was a force to be reckoned with, but she was never disrespectful and always expected propriety from everyone on both sides. Nicole conveyed confidence, integrity, and professionalism throughout the year-long divorce process. Nicole made sure that I understood what the future may hold in regard to modification of my court orders and she worked diligently during the proceeding to document all pertaining facts and to make sure that whatever may come later would be prepared for with substantial evidence and information relevant to my case. Nicole was also very responsive to my questions and inquiries and has remained so even though my case is now complete. I know that I can always count on her if I need her in the future. I would highly recommend her to anyone looking for an intelligent, ethical, knowledgable family law attorney who will guide and advise them through what is very likely an emotionally difficult and challenging time. Nicole had the right amount of empathy for what I was going through, but also knew how to steer me toward getting to the end result - freedom from a marriage that was not working. Nicole made sure that I would have a future with the financial support that I deserved after a long term marriage and she really wanted the best for me personally, which I really appreciated. I always felt that she was on my side from start to end and I am very happy that she represented me. Nicole is a great family law attorney and she is a credit to her profession. Thank you Nicole!

Completely unprofessional. Nicole Nuzzo was rude & condescending right from the start of our conversation. She talked over me, talked down to me, wasn’t willing to listen and was insulting. To top it off, Nicole decided to give me her personal opinion (after only 30 min on the phone) that “The writing is on the wall… your marriage isn’t going to work”… I hadn’t asked for her fortune-telling advice on whether my marriage was going to work out, as we were talking about a postnup. Also, I mentioned advice I received from another attorney who’s a professor, Nicole quipped back at me in a condescending tone, “Yeah, I’m a professor too... that doesn’t mean anything” (great way to promote yourself Nicole). All of this was done on our first consultation call, where I was looking to potentially hire her/ her firm. For being in family law, Nicole completely lacks compassion for other human beings while they’re going through what is likely people’s scariest, most stressful & saddest time in their lives. Don’t even bother paying for a consultation with her! Save yourself the money & frustration.

I had a difficult, complicated case with a past divorce issue, back child and spousal support and a home with a lien on it. Nicole was amazing, articulate, knowledgeable and creative in handling my case. I would highly recommend her. I have had many other law firms try and help me, but she was the only one who went above and beyond to settle all the issues and allow me to move on. I am forever grateful to have worked with her.

It gives me great pleasure to supply this commendation for a man of great wisdom and insight, Mr. Bill Cumming, our attorney who successfully defended our case. I was impressed by his services. He took time to explain legal terminology and methods employed in our case using speech that gave us clarity and understanding. His listening ear is one of his many hallmarks. Mr. Cumming took great care to manifest the road ahead of us and the direction and delays which might confront our course. The case against us was cruel and overwhelming, and stretched over many years. We received first class treatment, always professional and courteous. We also sensed compassion and empathy in just the right amounts. During the long route, Mr. Cumming, in his tireless approach, showed himself to be a strong defender, encouraging us along the way as our case took some turns. Mr. Cumming was skillful, sharp and accurate. Our defender never lost his cool under fire. His task and preparation was entire and thorough. I was impressed to note the late or early hours of his communications. In summary, I am certain that no better services of legal defense could exceed the work of Mr. Cumming. My observations are that he is brilliant and has great insight. We are so very thankful for his efforts and work on our behalf.

I was approached by my primary multi billion $ supplier to purchase my company. I was sure I could negotiate the deal myself and use a local Minnesota attorney for the details. After my first phone conversation I realized I was hopelessly out of my league. I was put in contact with a consultant I had worked with previously and he suggested I include Bill Cumming of Cumming and Associates as my attorney. What a home run that turned out to be. My stress level initially was off the charts when I saw the scope of the due diligence required to close the sale. Obviously, Bill handled the legal portions. He proactively told me not to be overly concerned about my legal record keeping because he knew most small business owners didn't have time to keep track of all the details and he could help me with that. The peace of mind that gave me was tremendously comforting. Bill didn't make me feel embarrassed that I didn't always do a good job keeping my corporate minutes up to date while trying to run my company. The finished due diligence product he delivered was well received by the purchaser even though Bill pushed back on some of their proposals. I struggle with legalese and was pleased with the attention to detail Bill paid, to my benefit. All in all, what would have been one of the most difficult experiences of my business life turned out to be remarkably smooth thanks to Bill's efficiency, demeanor and sense of humor.

Recently, I was faced with the prospect of trying to sell the business I had owned and managed for 35 years to a Fortune 500 company. Having never negotiated such a complex process, I (wisely) decided to enlist the services of a reputable consultant, and his first recommendation was that I should hire a stellar attorney--one with solid experience, integrity, and careful attention to detail. Fortunately for me, he suggested I contact Bill Cumming. In retrospect, I can say that hiring Mr. Cumming was one of the best business decisions I've ever made. He is honest, affable, knowledgeable, accessible, and very efficient. Over the following 12 weeks, he handled all the legal complexities of our negotiations, making certain my interests were protected at every turn, and at the end of the process, produced a very favorable outcome. (He also refunded the unused portion of his initial retainer fee!) Needless to say, Bill Cumming has earned my undying respect and gratitude. I can recommend him and his staff without reservation.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Costa Mesa, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
