I had Rachel Margolis Chapman as my defense lawyer for a silly trespassing violation and I truly felt like she was there for my defense. She was easy to talk to and always replied promptly with any questions or concerns I had. She was very professional yet down to earth and I always felt like a valued client. With her help I was able to have a positive outcome from this ordeal. I would recommend her to anyone who faces charges and who wants a lawyer that actually cares about you and your case .

Things started out going well, but when it came to time to produce, the attorney I worked with ended up charging $2200 to research basic business law and then send me 2 forms he downloaded from atyourbusiness{dot}com and filled in the names on. How do I know where they were from, he didn’t even take the time to remove the “for more free forms, visit atyourbusiness{dot}com” footer from the files or put it on appropriate letterhead. In short, I paid $2200 for free forms and a person to do basic law research that I had already done. I expected much more from a “professional” business law attorney. I’d suggest staying away from this firm. You’d be much better served doing pretty much anything else in this instance.

Sumita worked with my wife and I to complete a living trust, will and associated documents. She was thoughtful, insightful, and supportive of us throughout the process. We worked remotely as appropriate and met when necessary, and she was quite responsive in communication. Documents were created in expeditious yet detailed fashion.

I recently got into a road accident and had the opportunity to work with Jyoti. From our very first conversation, it was clear that she is incredibly thoughtful and an excellent listener. Her attentiveness and understanding were evident, which prompted me to hire her immediately. Throughout the process, Jyoti was consistently on top of my case. She maintained regular follow-ups with the relevant authorities and kept me informed at every step. Her proactive approach and diligence were truly impressive. One of Jyoti's standout qualities is her ability to communicate on a human level. She provided a rational perspective even in the face of heightened emotions, which was incredibly reassuring. Her empathy and clear communication made a difficult situation much more manageable. Based on my experience, I would highly recommend Jyoti to anyone seeking legal help. Her professionalism, dedication, and compassionate approach make her an outstanding choice for legal representation.

Because of tax law changes, our very old trust needed to be restated. Receiving a recommendation from a friend introduced me to Elizabeth C,A, Johnson, JD, LL M in Danville California. Elizabeth is methodical, organized, and gets right down to business. She met with me a few times, found out what was needed and outlined what needed to happen. And, she GOT IT DONE. Not only was it done in a reasonable time, she provided a notebook that organized records and the required legal documents. This notebook will hold every paper needed to access the trust for our heirs. Bottom line: trust is up to date; paperwork is organized; we are breathing a sign of relief—in good time and at a reasonable price.

Creating and implementing a trust is complicated. Our experience with Elizabeth as our trust attorney was excellent and positive at all steps in the process. She was highly effective in both creating a trust and implementing a trust. Elizabeth’s vast experience creating trusts was evident as she made numerous suggestions to help ensure our intentions were properly documented. Some of these suggestions my wife and I would have never thought of, so we appreciated the intellectual value she brought to the table. Having spent more than a year settling a family member’s estate, I was keenly aware of the challenges of effectively implementing a trust. I was pleased that Elizabeth focused on ensuring our real property assets as well as our financial assets were properly transferred to our trust, and that appropriate beneficiaries were named. I particularly liked the binder that Elizabeth put together that contains all the relevant documentation. This organizational step will help ensure the executor of our estate has the necessary information at their fingertips to make settling the estate as painless as possible. Thank you for helping us create our trust. We highly recommend the Law Office of Elizabeth C. A. Johnson.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Danville, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
