After an arduous legal effort evicting hoarder tenants that destroyed my mother's future retirement home, I retained The Schaps Law Office after the sale of the property. My goal was to recover sanitizing and repair costs incurred -- from the property manager who neglected to fulfill her responsibilities that resulted in a brand new home becoming a shockingly uninhabitable health hazard in extreme disrepair. With rapt attention and a seasoned ear, Michael Schaps listened to my story and provided his blunt and realistic guidance. A small but mighty team, he and his associate Rachel were supportive partners who managed my case from the initial communication through mediation to the final settlement outcome. I greatly appreciated both their patience and professionalism as I navigated through this first-time legal process. And while I hope I never need to endure such a taxing and emotionally exhausting experience again, I am truly grateful that our paths crossed. Michael and Rachel provided expert service while creating a genuine, personal connection. I highly recommend The Schaps Law Office.

I recently contacted the Schaps Law Office for a consultation on a legal matter that was extremely complex and fraught with legal challenges. Michael called me back within a few hours and spent a lengthy amount of time with me on the phone. Not only was he an awesome and patient listener, he provided me with honest and insightful feedback that allowed me to make a wise decision. As a legal professional myself, Michael's analysis of the complex legal issues at stake rang both true and were representative of a highly skilled and brilliant legal mind. I would highly recommend the Schaps Law Office for any civil litigation matter. Please call Michael before you call anyone else--you won't be sorry!

Nobody wants the services of a personal injury attorney (as that means you've been injured), and while Mike does litigate other types of cases, I needed his help after my car was totaled by a distracted driver here in Davis. After the accident I was honestly lost. My long term injuries were mental, in addition to some physical, and there are attorneys that are callous towards mental injuries. In fact I was mocked by an attorney in Sacramento. On the other hand Mike was extremely compassionate and understanding. I retained Mike after our first in person meeting (this was in the pre-covid era). He walked me through the process, let me know what to expect, and told me of the pros and cons of each path. He ultimately let's the client choose the path best for them, and he will support either decision. Insurance companies do not respect mental injuries unfortunately. Their final, best, offer was well below what we were asking. This meant that we had to file a lawsuit, extending the process. Then the pandemic hit. Things were chaotic, but Mike was persistent, and discussed what was happening even though things were now at a snails pace. Along the way Mike hired an additional attorney into his firm named Rachel. She is wonderful and helps with the legal filings and is also there to help with questions. They are both there during depositions and mediations. After a long period of back and forth, extended by the pandemic, we finally reached a settlement without going into court. Mentally it would not have been good for me to go to court, especially with the pandemic drawing out cases months to maybe even a year or more. I had to relive the accident during the deposition and would have had to relive it again in court, and Mike (caring about my well being mentally) recommended against it, even though he was willing to proceed to court if I wanted. In the end Mike and Rachel helped me secure a settlement about three times higher than what the insurance company wanted give, and while lower than what I wanted initially, mentally it was great to move on with less than having to drag this longer. Please note that Mike and Rachel were willing to move on to court if I wanted, but I decided it was best to settle. Finally, Mike's office is hard to find initially. The office is on the second floor, and the door to the stairs is in between Temple Coffee and Zuma Poke (on the third street side of the building). Mike had to run out and find me the first time. Thank you for all the help and support Mike and Rachel!

Mr. Schaps answered my phone call while on vacation out of the country. He stepped away from what he was doing and took the time to hear the details of my case and give me advice. He was incredibly helpful and understanding. Even though he was on vacation, I feel like he gave me his full attention. He even asked me to follow up and let him know what happened. Mr. Schapps seems incredibly patient and professional. I would absolutely hire him if I needed assistance in the future.

Sherine has been an enormous help to me during a high conflict and difficult time. She is both professional and incredibly thoughtful and I am so grateful to her for her understanding and patience with her clients like myself. She makes me feel safe and taken care of. She has invested personal time in reaching out to me to ensure things are going smoothly with my case and problem-solve whatever comes my way. I can't say enough good things about her. She's got you covered on the legal side of things, but also just makes you feel like you're being genuinely cared for by a friend. She is strong-mannered, detail oriented, and I've heard her be compared to a shark (in the best way) while in court. I also appreciate how strongly she advocates for those having trouble fighting for themselves. I can only hope that more people who are struggling find her because she is such an incredible resource.

How do you beat the best offense? By paying attention! Having a keen eye with a quick response. In my case, I got lucky to have an attorney who actually cares about me and the best interest for My family. Best part about Sherine is that she will quickly find the hidden secrets Lingering in the dark. Don’t be shy or scared to tell her everything. That’s why she’s there. To protect you. To help you. To be your shining light at the end of the tunnel. Don’t go to war with this attorney. YOU’LL LOSE.

I called Sherine's office completely out of hope and at a loss for what step to take next. I was immediately comforted by her wonderful and compassionate office staff who have been always been extremely helpful and supportive. Sherine passionately cares about her clients and uses her extensive legal experience to do everything she can to put you at ease. Despite every curveball that was thrown in my Child Custody/ DV case, Sherine and her staff have always been persistent, knowledgable and handled my case with a sense of urgency. I am forever grateful for the help, support and feeling a safety that I felt after choosing Sherine's office to represent me.

Nora Roos is hard working and highly educated. She has exceptional interpersonal skills and analytical skills. She was fierce as my attorney. I was lucky to have found her. She listen and took notes and then she got to work on my case. Numerous hours were spent researching and relaying her findings to me and my options. She made herself available to me and kept me informed. I could not have asked for anything more in an attorney.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Davis, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
