I hired Scott Tepper for a case filed against me for parental rights/custody and visitation. I interviewed another lawyer who told me I had no chance to get what I wanted. When I went to interview him he said... well is this what you want or are you settling? Let’s fight for what you want, you have a strong case. He is a very knowledgeable experienced attorney that brushed off the other “attorney’s” silly views and attempts at submitting paperwork. He stepped up when he had to, but also knew when to allow the other “attorney” to destroy himself, which he did for the most part. And we won my case and I got everything I wanted. I won’t go to anyone else for legal advice except him. Thank you Scott!!!

He never filed my Dissolution of marriage. He allowed a default marriage to go through where I lost everything. I could not go after him because he had no ENO insurance and no attorney would take the case. He promised to give me my money back. I never saw the money.

I have been a client of Mr Tepper's for over 23 years. He has handled all of my legal needs including my divorce, child support, custody, visitation, restraining orders, business incorporation, and my will. I have found Mr. Tepper to be nothing but very honest, professional, and diligent. My divorce was a long process due to my former spouse's lack of cooperation but Mr. Tepper stuck with me and fought hard for my son and I. Even 14 years after my divorce Mr. Tepper continued to represent me in obtaining a restraining order against my ex-husband. He is always willing to answer questions and give direction. I understand that not all cases go the way the client wishes but Mr. Tepper will advise the client the best course of action and fight for the best results. His office staff is also extremely professional, knowledgeable and helpful. I highly recommend Mr. Tepper. In fact, I have recommend him to several friends and business associates all of whom have been quite happy with Mr. Tepper's services.

Ken Baker is a "down to business" attorney that took charge of my legal matter with the confidence of a true professional. He helped me when I was in a dire situation. I originally contracted the services of another attorney which turned out to be a nightmare and a waste of time and finances. I was in desperate need for someone capable that would not over charge me and Ken Baker answered the call, he went above and beyond. He was able to explain the law in a manner that I could easily understand, but more importantly, he kept me updated through the entire process. After spending (both in time and money with the original attorney) 5 months with my original attorney, Ken Baker was able to start and close my case in a matter of 30 days. Unlike my original attorney, he was always available for advice, updates and requests always returning emails, phone calls, and even text messages. I was very pleased with his services and I definitely recommend him to whomever needs it.

I was very pleased with Mr. Honse. I was scared, but he was always so positive and upbeat. El Centro is a small town and it helped having an attorney, like Mr. Honse, who was well-known and obviously very respected. He knew just what to do and who to talk to. Two months after the case was over I had a problem with my insurance company. I called Mr. Honse and he was glad to help me and told me there would not be an additional fee. I could not be happier.

I was facing jail and losing my job. Mr. Honse insisted that I relax. He told me the system is filled with good people trying to do the right thing. He was right. I kept my job and got passed my problem. He is a very decent and fair man. Thank you so much

I was falsely accused of domestic violence. My girlfriend admitted that she had lied but the police still would not drop the charges. Mr. Honse was very calm and reassuring. He kept saying the District Attorney would not take the case seriously unless I was willing to go to trial and fight. On the day the jury trial was scheduled to start, the Distict Attorney told the court they did not have enough evidence and they dismissed the case. Thank you Mr. Honse. I was ready to give up but you refused to allow me to plead guilty to something I did not do.

The California DVM revoked my son's driver's license for not getting a medical exam as recommended to them by a California Highway Patrol Officer nearly a year a half ago. He was never notified to get a medical exam or that his license was revoked. Last December he was stopped for a stop sign violation. Surprise, my son's license was no good. He gets a stop sign charge (which he pleads guilty) the license he has in hand gets taken and the car is towed to the impound yard. He gets charged with a misdemeanor. My son got his license reinstated. Mr. Harter straightened the legal requirements out and met with with court at each step of the way. No charges were upheld by the court.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of El Centro, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
