I originally hired another attorney that claimed to be “the best in bay area”…If not the entire state of California. Unfortunately, they just took $10,000 from me and did absolutely zero. (okay they filed a summons and petition and that was it…for $10k!)! I found Miranda and she agreed to take my case. The amount of work that she did was 100 times more than the other attorney and for far less than they would charge! She helped me through the most difficult time in my life. When all hope was gone that I would get anything out of this divorce…she was right there, making sure I did. Going through a divorce is so emotional for everybody involved. To have someone that you know will truly represent you and your best interests, and help you through it all is what you need!! Miranda, is your person!

Bottom Line: If you need an attorney for family matters, this is the person you need by your side! Background: My case was one for the record books. It was a 10 year battle and it involved constant back and forth between me and my ex, coordinating across five states, and countless questions from me when my ex violated the court’s orders. Miranda fought for me every time my ex tried to lie about the situation. Being in the military, I left CA shortly after filing for divorce. When my ex abducted my kid, Miranda jumped into action, and had secured custody for me within a month. When I returned from overseas she coordinated with the second state my ex ran to and enabled me to get my son that day. Miranda is the consummate professional and was honest with me about how best to move forward. You can trust that she has your kids best interest at heart. Without her aid, my son would be dead or would have disappeared to another country. Moreover, she stood ready at anytime when custody changeovers took place. This was because my ex is notorious with breaking the rules. You will feel like you are her only client. Every time I called, emailed, or made a request it was responded to within hours with an answer, or suggested way ahead. She is without a doubt the best attorney, and person, I have ever met. If there is one takeaway it is that if you are honest with Miranda, and follow her advice, then you will not fail and you will not be disappointed.

Miranda helped me through every aspect of my complicated and stressful divorce case. My confidence in her abilities and expertise increased with each new complex legal development, and the end result of my case was much more positive than I had expected. Miranda and her staff always treated me with compassion and respect. I love that!

Miranda was my divorce attorney. From the first meeting with her, I started having my doubts. Much like the other review on here, I never felt like Miranda was on my side. It felt like she was on the side of opposing counsel. I had impressed upon her the importance of getting divorced quickly only to find that at every turn I was having to prompt her to move forward and take care of things for me. She made mistakes in calculations, did not subpoena information from my ex, did nothing about the medical that he discontinued (can't do that, we are still married). I cannot stress enough that I never felt like she was on my side. I understand attorneys are busy but communication was almost non-existent unless I reached out. I cannot stress enough how I did not feel supported or that she was on my side. There were mistakes made in calculations. when I brought up an important question about a process, she told me it wouldn't be possible, it would jeopardize the outcome. After my case dragged on for over a year with no progress, I talked to another attorney and as soon as he reviewed my info, he was flabbergasted to say the least. He told me that what I had requested was not only possible, but it would not jeopardize the outcome and that MONTHS ago, info that was need to move forward could have been subpoenaed to get things moving.

Miranda Barber is a very professional, ethical, and thorough lawyer! I have worked with her for four years and I highly recommend her. She is great at what she does! She communicates well and advocates for her clients in an honest and thoughtful manner. She is also very personable and takes her job as seriously as it is. I put my family in her hands often and she takes great care of them.

Our silicon valley startup was selling some of its assets, including a trademark, domain name, and some content. We had an extremely limited budget, but we also had very simple needs - we wanted to make sure our downside on the deal was highly limited. We were referred to Rob by one of our other attorneys. I got on the phone with Rob on a Friday afternoon and explained that we were just looking for an experienced lawyer to review one (pretty long) document, edit it to ensure our liability was limited, and also send a sample of another standard attachment for us to fill out. Rob and his team had everything done by Monday afternoon. On Tuesday evening after midnight, we had a couple additional quick questions, and Rob answered them within an hour at 1:15AM. We were able to wrap up the transaction smoothly afterwards. We enjoyed working with Rob - he completely understood our limited needs and was able to give us a quick turnaround at a reasonable price. I'd love to work with him again in the future.

I've used Rob for years at several enterprises, and he is outstanding in every way. But what sets Rob apart is his understanding of *business* and the practical tradeoffs and implications for contracts and business relationships with third parties. He's highly integrous, kind, and smart. Just what I want in an attorney. Use Rob - you will be thrilled you did.

I spoke to Mr Wallis on the phone recently regarding a Civil Dispute I was having with a neighbor. Peter listened to my complaint and consoled me as he had dealt with a similar situation. He gave me some good advice on the best way to deal with my situation. He was very honest and asked only that I share my experience to help other people make a decision who they would like to represent them.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Fairfield, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
