If you get Gabby from Adams & Corzine, you will be in good hands on how to handle your legal matters. She is easily one of the most polite legal representatives I met in regards to my situation. Many other places were not interested in my accident as no one was injured, but she actually took the time to examine my story, and gave valuable feedback. In case her bosses sees this; she deserves a raise. :)

After my father and I were involved in a pretty bad car wreck, we weren't sure who to turn to for help regarding the process of our case. When we were recommended to Mr. Adams by a freind we decided to give the law firm a visit. After our first meeting we felt very welcomed as Mr. Adams not only makes a strenuous effort to come out with the best outcome for our case, but he also makes an effort to get to know you and connect in a more personal level. Being a student a Sac state and he being an alumni there, we had a good time bonding while Mr. Adams guided me through tm he process and making sure I understood the situation and was up-to-date. If I ever find myself in a rocky situation like this again (hopefully not), there would be no other attorney and law firm I would turn to but Adams & Corzine. Thank you for everything!

Doug is an excellent lawyer. He doesn't even make you feel like he is your lawyer, he talks to you on a very personal level making you feel more like a long time friend you have known for years. When I first had my accident, Doug went out of his way to come to my house and see how I was doing. I was in a wheelchair at the time and this was very helpful of Doug. He has an excellent sense of humor but more importantly he is very smart and knows his craft well. You can tell by talking with Doug that he is well experienced and knows what he is doing. On top of that his assistant Gaby is helpful as well and answers questions in a timely manner. Doug is the lawyer you want whenever the time comes that you need one. I have had other lawyers in the past and Doug definitely sticks out more in my mind than the others. Doug genuinely cares about his clients and he is a man of his word. He is professional, personal and not hard to get ahold of. Doug thoroughly goes through your case with you making sure you understand everything and all the details surrounding it. You will not regret choosing Doug as your lawyer! I have recommended him to my family and friends.

The custody process even when it should be cut and dry, never is, and is scary. There is SO much on the line. My ex had criminal and drug problems but can work the system and has no prison record. The mediator wanted to give my lil guy to this druggie half time when he'd never raised him. My baby had never been without me, or my parents, or out of my reach, and suddenly I might have to let him go hours away to someone he didn't know. I was terrified and angry. This man had done so much damage to our lives I couldn't let him ruin this perfect being I had grown and almost died birthing. To top it off, my son is globally delayed and diagnosed with MR. So if something happened to him, my son couldn't tell me or anyone. Michelle was recommended to me and was an amazing advocate for my son and I. She is not only a great attorney, she specializes in cases with special needs children. I couldn't have asked for someone more understanding of my situation or better fitted to represent my son and what was best for him. I truly felt that she handled the paperwork for me, but represented my son, and spoke for him in a time of panic for me. She made the court see him, and not just a name on a docket. Through every step she was strong and committed and fought with grace and integrity, no name calling or even stooping when the other side tried. Michelle truly rose above and came to our aid at a time I as a mother, wasn't able to fight, but instead protected my son by letting her do what she is great at. There was nothing I couldn't tell her and she made me feel listened to and like my son was her priority and not just another case or check. Thank you Michelle!

I was one of those women who thought they couldn’t afford or need an attorney for my child custody conflict. The process of changing custody orders and adjusting child support was one of the most overwhelming situations I have ever faced. After stumbling through the initial process and making several mistakes, Michelle Stowell was referred to me by a very trusted colleague. She immediately made me feel empowered and assured. Her professional expertise and compassion were very comforting throughout the entire process and led to a successful outcome for me and my daughters. Thankfully, when I realized I needed an attorney, I chose her! If I could go back in time the only thing I would change is to hire Michelle from the very beginning of my divorce process. I highly recommend Michelle Stowell for anyone battling for their family rights. She was my lifer-saver in a treacherous sea of uncharted waters.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Folsom, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
