Laurie Cortez recently helped us settle a labor wage lawsuit. I was very impressed by her knowledge, experience and overall attitude. She was patient answering my many questions and explained everything in detail. I felt her genuine willingness to help us obtain the best outcome. She was able to reach a settlement amount that satisfied both parties fully. I would highly recommend contacting her for a consultation.

Words can’t even describe how pleased I am with Laurie Cortez and her team for fighting for me and justice in my case. Laurie knows what she’s doing, my case took 2 1/2 years to settle and even though there were times I felt so doubtful, she always reassured me everything would work out and that ultimately gave me hope and stopped me from having doubt. When I first walked into Emilo Law Group and met Laurie, I knew right away that I could trust her and would be in good hands. She was honest and never stopped working on my case. I just want to thank you again Laurie from the bottom of my heart thank you so much, God bless you always!

I hope I have an option of more than 5 stars!!! In the end of January 2017, I Called Emilio Law office and left a message when I got worried about my case (sued by a big and public listed company and initially being asked for multi-million dollars...) and was not really confident with my existing attorney, Laurie called me back with a positive willing to help and scheduled me a meeting on the same day. After about one-hour meeting (even no charge!!!), I felt I have no reasons to stay with my existing attorney and walk away from this honest Lawyer, Laurie Cortez. Remember, I did not tell her that I had an existing attorney that I had been working with but without sufficient confidence until the last minutes when I left her office. I Signed agreement next day (maybe the first day I just forgot it) and hired her. Laurie reviewed my case very carefully, investigated all details by spending a lot of time, she also browsed my company's websites very carefully to see if we really did something wrong. She walked me through all the procedure with more than enough patience, she was always patient and tried hard to educate me that I have to stay calm and act reasonably even when I feel I got a little bit depressed, angry or even crazy with my situation. She educated me how to process at each step yet let me decide what and when to make a response to the opposing counsel. She definitely worked much more than what she got paid, at least this was the fact in my lawsuit case. Because of her experienced working and honesty, I am quite certain that Laurie at least saved my company thousands of or even tens thousand dollars legal fees on my case comparing to my previous attorney. I do not want to owe somebody else but this time I feel that I owe Laurie Cortez once, she just did much more than I paid her, as a business man I understand that everybody's time is valuable, I wrote her email that she can invoice me for her extra work but she never did. Now my case was settled with pleasure and I am a happy man again! I just hope my english is better and have more and better words to express my thanks to my attorney, Laurie Cortez! You can't go wrong with Laurie, as she let me feel that she would never charge one dime for anything she couldn't be helpful. Laure, Thank you so much for everything! Kevin Lee

My immigration case was very complicated and I had contacted other law firms before but they said there was little they could do for me. But George was able to help me in spite of the odds against me. I am very great full for having found him. I actually can move on with my life now and have peace of mind. Through the process he actually took the time to visit me and contact me personally to let me know every step of the way of all the procedures. Talk about holding your hand. Thanks George for all your help!!!

Do not look anywhere else. Eric is amazing. Quick, sharp, and charismatic. I've been through 1 divorce working with 2 different lawyers. Through my divorce process, I've witnessed Eric, my previous attorney, opposing's 2 attorneys, and dozens of other family law lawyers while sitting in the court room waiting for my trial to be heard. I started with another lawyer, but wish I went with Eric the first time around.  Out of all of the other attorneys I've witnessed, Eric is, hands-down, the most capable I've seen.... Like a TV lawyer!  Everyone seems to respect him including the judge, minors' counsel, and even opposing counsel. His rates are comparable to bigger firms, but you'll likely pay less due to his efficiency. He keeps you in the loop and responds promptly to questions.  Message me, and I'll answer any questions about my experience. I wish I started with Eric, and I'm glad I found him when I did.

Eric was a great lawyer. Help me through my custody and got me a fair and reasonable result. He never seem to pressure me or used scare tactics. On the contrary, he' comforted me along the way. He even suggested that I may not have needed him at one point b/c I was doing ok on my own for the preliminary hearings.

Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Garden Grove, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
