Pros
1
The law firm is experienced in handling workers' compensation cases
“Garrett Law Group was my third attorney in my workmans compensation case. I could never get my first or second attorney to call me back. The staff at the Garrett firm left me on hold a lot. (Like the government does!) But when I finally did talk to them they explained the whole process about money I would get and the neutral doctor. I got a good settlement.”
2
The staff is knowledgeable and provides detailed information about the case process
“Garrett Law Group gets the job done, Day by Day. I've had 3 attorneys in my past WC case. I can honestly say its tough for the assistants who do so much for us. My assistant on my case has taken care of me well. I have been on hold before but obviously I am not the only client they have. Wait is normal, Every person I have spoken with has had a professional matter. Always answers my questions, Well detailed.”
Cons
1
Poor communication and lack of responsiveness from the attorney and staff
“No communication with their clients at all, will settle for less in your case. be aware they never answer calls I miss court because they didn't notify me about court days. Don't Hire Be Aware!!!! They will settle and tell you that you'll be getting your settlement check in a few weeks it been 7 months.”
2
Rude and unprofessional office staff
“Receptionist very very rude... one you start talking she cuts you off everytime puts you on hold then comes back and asks "what did you need?"... you start explaining as quick as you can and she cuts you off again.. she has no customer service knowledge and if she can't handle the job of helping people .. then she should work at a morgue”
3
Lack of attention and care for the client's case and well-being
“ABSOLUTE HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!!! I HIRED SUSAN M GARRETT OVER A YEAR AGO AND HAVE NEVER SPOKEN TO HER BY PHONE AND HAVE NEVER MET HER. THE OFFICE STAFF OR ASSISTANTS ARE BEYOND RUDE. THEY FRUSTRATE YOU INSTEAD OF HELPING. THEY ARE ALWAYS BUSY AND LEAVE YOU ON HOLD FOR A LONG TIME AND IF YOU'RE LUCKY TO GET THEM TO HEAR YOU THEY HANG UP ON YOU, LEAVE YOU TALKING BY YOURSELF. THEY NEVER INFORM YOU OF ANYTHING ABOUT YOUR CASE. NO ONE THERE SEEMS TO CARE FOR YOUR PAINFUL INJURIES OR SUFFERING OR ECONOMIC PROBLEMS DUE TO THEIR LACK OF STRONG LEGAL HELP.”

My case was referred/assigned to Susan Garrett through a well known attorney referral service. Upon first interview I was empressed; and was informed that the case would settle within 6 to 18 months. To date I have yet to hear from Attorney Garrett or any of her staff regarding my case. The office staff puts you on hold, on a regular basis; and when they return to the phone they will say so-in-so is on the telephone or with a client; leave your name and contact number and the will return your call. I have yet to speak with someone who has knowledge of my case. "Are you with a client all day?" I would never refer anyone to this attorney. She nor her staff care about her clients or their case. An attorney who is concerned about their clients will keep them abreast of the status of their case; and/or have someone from their office to be able to answer questions or even give an update about their case. When I complained to the company who assigned her to me, I was informed the Attorney Garrett was no longer with them. "No reason given." So as it stands at this time; I don't know what I should or shouldn't do. It is not like I file "Workers' Compensation" suits for a living.

We recently used Sarkis Babachanian when a family member of mine was being accused for a "hit and run" and charges were about to be filed when in fact my family member was the victim of the "hit and run" as it was the other party that hit our car and did not stay at the accident scene. Sarkis gathered the necessary evidence, started working very diligently with the detective who was investigating the case, had numerous telephone conversations with him, also had a face to face meeting and was able to get the file closed without any charges being filed. He was always accessible either via phone, text or an email. We were happy to hire Sarkis and would recommend him ti anyone. Thank you Sark!

Sharon fought for me and wiped my DMV record. I owe her much thanks. During these trying times of Covid, I needed a clean record to expand my employment opportunities. Sharon went to bat for me and made it happen.

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Glendale, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
