I came to Chuck with a possible DUI conviction. He kept me well informed and gave me a realistic expectation of what is to come. He was very professional and answered all my questions. He made me feel comfortable with the procedure which was really important to me. He went through all possible measures to reduce the conviction to a wet and reckless. I learned a lot from Chuck and would highly recommend him.

My name is Armando Zatarain and I am a private investigator. I worked with Mr.Stoddard for the first time approximately ten years ago. It was a multi-million dollar fraud case and our client was charged with multiple felonies. The client was accused of being the ring leader in an international scheme that resulted in a $20,000,000 loss to major insurance companies. Chuck worked diligently for over a year and was successful in getting the case reduced to a misdemeanor and no jail time. I have worked many other cases with Chuck almost all of them have had good or great results. He is an extremely intelligent man, but he is also very kind and considerate. His clients are usually as impressed with how nice he is as well as how well he handles their cases. He has done more than his share of work for clients that needed him, but could not afford him. His clients constantly refer other people in need to him without fear or reservation. I do the same. Chuck's experience and his keen insight led him on one occasion to discover that the police had searched a car without proper authority. I had read the same report and missed that important point. The DA was faced with dismissal of the case or giving the client a greatly reduced sentence and credit time served. He chose the latter rather than lose the motion. On another occasion a client was charged with molesting his step daughter. No physical evidence was found; only the testimony of the juvenile who did not like the step dad because he was a strict disciplinarian. We went over the case time and time again. The client insisted on going to trial although it was the victim's word against the client and she had already testified like an expert at prelim. Chuck found inconsistencies in her testimony during trial and exploited them. The client was facing 18 years in prison and lifetime registration for a crime he had not committed. The client was found not guilty at trial. A man was charged with felony hit and run. He was facing multiple years in prison. He had been held for four months pending trial; Chuck got the entire case dismissed literally on the eve of trial because the police had arrested the wrong man. I will stop here. If you need a great lawyer who is also a nice, kind and honest man I highly recommend that you consult with Charles Stoddard.

I have (for better of worse) had the need to engage a handful of attorneys over the years, and without a doubt, I will attest to the fact that Chuck Stoddard would be my de facto go to guy going forward...unless of course it was outside the scope of his expertise...in which case he reffered a friend of mine to another high caliber lawyer. Chuck (unlike some others) is not just about the money, he is truly campassionate...perhaps with an extra dash of vigor in my case since such case is baseless....he is extreemely knowledgable and a stand up guy.

Marc did a great job representing me. I had never been in any trouble before & I was a mess. I have a professional license & worried about how that would be affected. Marc was very helpful & reassuring when I first called. I really appreciate his hard work & how he answered my questions in such a prompt manner.

Marc helped me and a couple other delinquents I know with traffic tickets. He made everything worry-free and easy. He made it seem like it was just no big deal, even though I know there was actually time and effort involved. Thanks Marc! Hopefully I WON'T be calling you soon! ;)

Marc helped me out with a traffic ticket that I got a few years back. I don't live in California and I needed Marc to appear in court for me. He informed me that there would be additional fees added to the initial fine for the ticket. In the end, he got the fine reduced which I was hoping he could do. We communicated by email and he replied promptly. He was a great help and seemed to really do anything he could to keep things fair between his client and the court.

I hired Jim McKanna based on the strong recommendation of a close colleague whom had worked with him in the past. I was arrested for a DUI and was terrified to say the least; Jim immediately helped alleviate those fears. Jim was professional and prepared and he was able to answer all of my questions with a confidence earned from years of legal practice and experience. After a few phone calls to the courthouse Jim was able to outline a legal strategy and time-line that would ensure the most favorable possible outcome considering the facts of my case. Jim was with me throughout the entire process, he made himself available at all times to answer questions and to simply put me at ease. Jim was very reasonable and fair with his pricing, but more importantly Jim gave me peace of mind and the confidence to move forward with the legal process. Jim was non-judgmental, tenacious, professional and kind; he helped me to navigate a very difficult time in my life. I give Mr. McKanna the highest of praise and recommend him without hesitation to anyone in need of legal counsel.

My wife and I have come to know Mr. McKanna for the past 10 years as an outstanding attorney and a wonderful person. He helped us on several occasions with legal challenges. Jim is extremely experienced and knowledgeable, yet always accessible and reliable. He works every case, even a simple infraction as it was his own. If you need a highly effective lawyer and a reliable friend, I strongly suggest to give Jim a call.

I give James McKanna my highest personal recommendation. He is an attorney of high character, diligence and skill . I had a slip and fall personal injury matter which was approaching the statute of limitations. I asked Mr. McKanna to review my file to see if I had a case. He immediately went into action, filed a lawsuit and quickly obtained my medical records. Jim was able to negotiate a very good settlement within 3 months of the lawsuit being filed. which I attribute to his high level advocacy and interpersonal demeanor. I would highly recommend Mr. McKanna for any personal injury matter. Future clients will not be disappointed.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Huntington Beach, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
