I cannot express enough gratitude for Raja and The Gil Law Firm. I was going through one of the most difficult times in my life—a heartbreaking breakup and a complex custody dispute that left me feeling hopeless, confused, and completely overwhelmed. As a civil litigation attorney with years of experience in tort law, I thought I could navigate the legal system on my own. However, the self-help resources provided by the court were overly complicated, and even after seeking assistance from the local legal aid society, I felt lost—like I would never see my child again. After interviewing numerous law firms, I chose to hire Raja and his team, and it was the best decision I could have made. From day one, Raja and his incredible staff took the time to explain the process, laying out all the legal challenges and avenues I would face. He was upfront and honest—he didn’t sugarcoat the difficulties of the case, but he did show genuine empathy and care for me, my child, and my situation. Raja’s knowledge and dedication were unparalleled. He was always available, even for late-night calls and texts when I was filled with doubt or ready to give up. He supported me every step of the way, ensuring that I never felt alone in this fight. Thanks to his hard work and relentless advocacy, what once seemed impossible became a reality—I was reunited with my child. Words cannot fully express how grateful I am for Raja and The Gil Law Firm. Their compassion, professionalism, and unwavering dedication changed my life, and for that, I will forever be thankful. If you are looking for a family law attorney who truly cares and will fight for you, look no further. Raja is the one you want in your corner.

Had the pleasure of working with Raja Gill, Elizabeth Heiner, and Mellissa Gómez at Gill law group. The team is exceptional, they are knowledgeable and take pride in their work. From the moment I stepped foot into the office I was reassured I was in good hands and they got to working on my case immediately. However, I would like to take the time to highlight Melissa’s kindness. Going through a custody battle is incredibly stressful and consuming but Melissa went above and beyond to make sure I not only felt supported and heard by the team, but gave me all the answers I needed regarding my case. I can never thank her enough for her transparency and the time she dedicated to my case. The team is extremely lucky to have her!

**Review of Gill Law Group**: I had an extremely frustrating experience with Gill Law Group and specifically with Raja's office. When I first walked in for a consultation, Raja made big promises, assuring me that he could help with my divorce and even promised to hold my ex in contempt, claiming he would do everything necessary to push the case forward. I felt confident in his assurances. However, things quickly took a turn for the worse. Despite knowing that I didn’t have the financial means to pay upfront, they began accumulating my bill in anticipation of the upcoming hearing. As time went on, their strategy became clear: they were more interested in racking up fees than actually working toward a resolution. They suggested a strategy that was completely counterproductive and ultimately would not help my case. Just two days before my court hearing, they dropped me, advising me to get a continuance so I could save money, even though I had already paid them for their services. To make matters worse, they continued to bill me during this period, charging me for communications about the strategy they never even followed through with. And then, out of nowhere, an additional $3,900 appeared on my bill. In total, they billed me over $11,000 in one month for services that were not only ineffective but actively harmed my case. I felt like I was being extorted. The pressure to come up with more money or risk being abandoned at the hearing was beyond unprofessional. They were hired to attend my hearing, not to charge me exorbitant fees for billing-related tasks like writing down appointments. It felt like a shake-down. After reading through other reviews, I found that many others had similar negative experiences. The only review that truly resonated with my situation was the one that echoed the same frustrations I experienced. If you're considering this firm, I'd strongly recommend you look elsewhere for legal representation.

I suffered a dog bite that could have ended much worse than it did and left me with a scar. I had no insurance at the time and ended up with costly ER bills. I contacted John as I had no idea how to handle this complicated situation on my own. From day one, John was empathetic and reassuring that he'd do his best to help find a proper resolution. From my experience, I can tell he genuinely cares about the well-being of his clients. He was always ready to answer calls and kept me up to date during very complicated times. We recently wrapped up the situation and he was able to reach a resolution that we were both comfortable with. I really can't recommend John enough. If you ever find yourself in such an unfavorable situation as I did, reach out to John.

My wife suffered a traumatic incident in which a neighbor's pit bull dog killed our dog while she was on a walk and pushing our 1 year old in a stroller. We later came to learn that the pit bull dog had attacked another family that same day causing serious injuries. It was truly a horrific time for us not knowing if or how we could ever recover from this event. With John's help, we were able to pursue and ultimately reach a settlement with the homeowner's insurance company for our loss and suffering. John also helped me get the word out to the community, joining me at a neighborhood meeting that was organized to address concerns with dog attacks in the area. John is a true professional. He knows the law and he understands the process by which matters such as ours are resolved. This was tremendously valuable to us. John is honest, diligent, and forthcoming with his opinions yet maintains a steady and remarkable composure when dealing with a case. I am truly grateful that we found John to help us out.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the expected timeline for my case?

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Irvine, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
