I knew when he told me how sorry he felt for my ex that I should've walked out, but I didn't listen to my gut. I felt like I was working with a brand new attorney. He knew some things, but sometimes it seemed like he didn't know what he was doing. He failed to file a document on time which impacted the money I was asking for and lengthened my time in court. Instead of combining everything into one filing, we had to do it in two. Just ridiculous. The lack of attention was bad, but what made it worse is that I always felt like he wasn't on my side. Several times I had to advocate for myself with him. Why exactly am I paying someone if they aren't on my side? I was in a bind and I will always regret not walking out. I don't recommend this office. He's a nice enough guy, I'm sure, but he didn't represent me well. I should have been able to relax a little and I couldn't. Not impressed.

Andrew and his firm and his family are great at what they do. I've met with him many times on behalf of my own clients and have found him very knowledgeable, friendly and pleasant to work with, even in the midst of very unpleasant circumstances. He and his firm have decades of experience in family law and I'd wholly recommend him.

We engaged Andrew’s father’s services almost 8 years ago and started using Andrew to represent us about 6 years ago. If one has to employ the services of a family lawyer for this long, it had better be from someone in which they have great confidence. For us, this is, without a doubt, Andrew. Andrew has masterfully represented us through a plethora of family law issues ranging from custody matters to complicated spousal and child support litigation. It does not seem there is anything in family law he cannot competently and expertly handle. Andrew is as smart as they come, a problem solver and a strong negotiator. He is always calm, composed and speaks with confidence and authority. While he is a “no non-sense” man who will always be candid with you, he is also compassionate and genuinely cares about the welfare of his clients, particularly their children. Andrew wants justice for his clients and he will tirelessly fight for it. We unequivocally and without reservation recommend Andrew for anyone’s family law needs.

Mr. Miller handled a business litigation case for my family. There was a lot on the line financially for us. Adam was professional in every way. He helped calm our fears about the lawsuit and would answer and return our phone calls immediately. He had a solid strategy and was victorious in the end. We had already come to terms with a certain amount of money we would be out, but in the end, we weren't out any money and Adam's fees were very reasonable.

We needed a real estate attorney to help us work ourselves through a fairly complicated real estate deal that involved a properties purchase, modifying the existing property lines to new locations, placing deed restrictions on the remaining land to be sold and finally, a sale of the residual property to our new neighbors. Alex was pretty much a best case scenario. He was enthusiastic, forward thinking and finally, very reasonable with his billings. We are completely satisfied with our dealings with him, and recommend him without hesitation.

I suffered a dog bite that could have ended much worse than it did and left me with a scar. I had no insurance at the time and ended up with costly ER bills. I contacted John as I had no idea how to handle this complicated situation on my own. From day one, John was empathetic and reassuring that he'd do his best to help find a proper resolution. From my experience, I can tell he genuinely cares about the well-being of his clients. He was always ready to answer calls and kept me up to date during very complicated times. We recently wrapped up the situation and he was able to reach a resolution that we were both comfortable with. I really can't recommend John enough. If you ever find yourself in such an unfavorable situation as I did, reach out to John.

My wife suffered a traumatic incident in which a neighbor's pit bull dog killed our dog while she was on a walk and pushing our 1 year old in a stroller. We later came to learn that the pit bull dog had attacked another family that same day causing serious injuries. It was truly a horrific time for us not knowing if or how we could ever recover from this event. With John's help, we were able to pursue and ultimately reach a settlement with the homeowner's insurance company for our loss and suffering. John also helped me get the word out to the community, joining me at a neighborhood meeting that was organized to address concerns with dog attacks in the area. John is a true professional. He knows the law and he understands the process by which matters such as ours are resolved. This was tremendously valuable to us. John is honest, diligent, and forthcoming with his opinions yet maintains a steady and remarkable composure when dealing with a case. I am truly grateful that we found John to help us out.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Irvine, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
