When it comes to family law, having a competent, understanding, and well-respected attorney is a must. After much research, we decided to trust Jon Mason with our move-away case. After explaining our situation during a phone consultation, he was honest with us about the challenges we might face and gave us a good idea of what we could expect. Throughout the whole process, he made himself available for phone calls, responded promptly to our emails, and was diligent in writing and filing paperwork for our case. After submitting declarations and enduring a 730 child evaluation (ruling in our favor), we were able to reach a settlement allowing us to move out of state with our son. We can’t put into words how grateful we are for Mr. Mason and all the hard work he put in to winning our case. Move-away cases can be difficult to win, but with the guidance and expertise that Jon brings to the table, you’ll set yourself up for the best chance at winning.

I don't write many reviews but felt compelled to given Jonathan Mason's excellent work on our complicated out of state child custody case. After researching many reviews/websites he was a godsend to our family. We wanted someone we could feel comfortable with as well as someone who had enough experience to guide us through this dreadful process. He was responsive, patient, compassionate, honest and gave us piece of mind the entire time. He handled our case with the highest degree of professionalism. Jonathan helped bring the truth and facts to light in our court case. I want to thank Jonathan for representing us during one of the most difficult, frustrating and emotional times for our family. He always made us feel like our case was priority. Because of him we were able to gain primary custody of our five year old!!! I can't express how highly I recommend his services to anyone who feels like they are the underdog. If you are reading this you MUST hire him and if you don't, I wish you luck because you will need it. Jonathan - I wish you and your team much success! You will forever be our go to attorney and we will send friends and family your way.

If you're If you’re reading this, you’re probably in the same place that I was, over a year ago. I researched many attorneys, and I hired Jon. Several things struck me back then, and still hold true to this day. Here’s how I describe Jon: Honest – Jon is absolutely the most honest and straight-forward attorney that I met in my interview process. He doesn’t sugar-coat things… he gives you the facts that you will need to know, and he’ll set your expectations correctly. Diligent – Divorce is a horrific process, and you need someone that works hard, is patient with both the process, and with YOU as a client. I can almost certainly guarantee that there will be times that you’re frustrated beyond belief. Not at Jon… but at things that just happen in divorce. He has worked hard for me, and I appreciate his efforts. Knowledgeable. My last job was contract compliance for Federal procurement, that included my own skills in understanding laws, rules, regulations, etc. Divorce is 5% laws… 95% people. Jon does a very good job of managing the process, communicating with the other side and more importantly, with the judge at hearings. Bottom line… I have entrusted him with the most important thing in my life so far… custody for my two girls. It’s a very long and stressful process, and I could not imagine going through this without Jon working on the behalf of me and my girls. Thank you Jon for all your hard work. reading this,

Jonathan was a huge help in my custody and support case. He was very understanding of my position, he knew how much my children meant to me and how important is was for me to be a father to them as much as I could. I have always wanted to be a 50/50 parent and I had to fight every step of the way. He fought for my wants to have 50/50 custody and a realistic support plan and that is what happened. I now enjoy my kids half of the time and I have Jonathan to thank for that. I appreciate all the work he has done for me and my children.

Mr. Miller handled a business litigation case for my family. There was a lot on the line financially for us. Adam was professional in every way. He helped calm our fears about the lawsuit and would answer and return our phone calls immediately. He had a solid strategy and was victorious in the end. We had already come to terms with a certain amount of money we would be out, but in the end, we weren't out any money and Adam's fees were very reasonable.

We needed a real estate attorney to help us work ourselves through a fairly complicated real estate deal that involved a properties purchase, modifying the existing property lines to new locations, placing deed restrictions on the remaining land to be sold and finally, a sale of the residual property to our new neighbors. Alex was pretty much a best case scenario. He was enthusiastic, forward thinking and finally, very reasonable with his billings. We are completely satisfied with our dealings with him, and recommend him without hesitation.

I suffered a dog bite that could have ended much worse than it did and left me with a scar. I had no insurance at the time and ended up with costly ER bills. I contacted John as I had no idea how to handle this complicated situation on my own. From day one, John was empathetic and reassuring that he'd do his best to help find a proper resolution. From my experience, I can tell he genuinely cares about the well-being of his clients. He was always ready to answer calls and kept me up to date during very complicated times. We recently wrapped up the situation and he was able to reach a resolution that we were both comfortable with. I really can't recommend John enough. If you ever find yourself in such an unfavorable situation as I did, reach out to John.

My wife suffered a traumatic incident in which a neighbor's pit bull dog killed our dog while she was on a walk and pushing our 1 year old in a stroller. We later came to learn that the pit bull dog had attacked another family that same day causing serious injuries. It was truly a horrific time for us not knowing if or how we could ever recover from this event. With John's help, we were able to pursue and ultimately reach a settlement with the homeowner's insurance company for our loss and suffering. John also helped me get the word out to the community, joining me at a neighborhood meeting that was organized to address concerns with dog attacks in the area. John is a true professional. He knows the law and he understands the process by which matters such as ours are resolved. This was tremendously valuable to us. John is honest, diligent, and forthcoming with his opinions yet maintains a steady and remarkable composure when dealing with a case. I am truly grateful that we found John to help us out.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Irvine, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
