Josh and the firm have been a great asset and friend to our organization for many years, helping us with a wide array of legal matters, both small and large. He is always thorough in his process, very up front and honest, doing what is best for our organization. We use Josh for international supplier contracts, employee contracts, employee disputes, and he has also helped in matters outside the scope of his practice by looping in others in his office or outside his firm to help our organization in any way possible. I highly recommend Josh to other businesses.

As a budding entrepreneur I've had the fortunate problem that young growing companies face where there are too many responsibilities for a small staff to do leading to not having all the necessary policies in place to safely protect our company against unethical players. An action taken towards our company forced me to quickly need a lawyer to help represent us in a legal matter. Josh was recommended to me by my best friend who has worked with him before and was very satisfied. I had reached out to Josh a year ago regarding a review of a 1099 contract (which in the end fell through and so I did not contract him then). I got a very good feeling then as his responses were clear, quick, informative, personable and very helpful. When I reached out to him this second time there was a lot I needed to learn and decide in a very short time-frame. Due to our goodwill approach to doing business we had a lot more legal exposure in this matter than I ever would have considered possible for a small company wishing to do well by others. On the first call Josh was helpful in putting all the facts forward and explaining the various scenarios that could possibly play out and recommended a plan to follow to help resolve this as quickly and cost effectively as possible. Throughout 3 weeks of calls, emails, fact searching and finally a negotiation he was able to guide us through a very complex landscape of tricky regulatory legislature to reach a resolution that was much less expensive emotionally, time-wise and financially than anticipated (by a significant amount). This situation could have ended up costing our company a sum that could easily put a small team like ours out of business. As I expressed to Josh, I can now look back and feel gratitude that this unpleasant situation happened as it has allowed us to learn and put in place the necessary policies to make our company compliant with local and federal law to ensure similar problems don't occur to us in the future. Consulting a good lawyer ahead of time is like investing in a good insurance policy. Once problems arise having an excellent lawyer at hand to help and guide you is worth its weight in gold. I am thankful to Josh not only for the legal support he gave, but his humanity and the emotional support extended in dealing with this delicate and potentially harmful situation. I found the transparency and professionalism he practices not only in his work but in his billing a refreshing and unexpected surprise to the anticipated notions about lawyer fees. Though it is best not to need them, it is important to have a lawyer of trust and excellence as part of your team for if/when it is needed. I am happy to now have a working relationship with Josh for all future needs our company might have as we continue to thrive. I recommend Joshua Waldman warmly. But don't just believe me or all the consistently outstanding reviews he has, reach out to him and let his excellence convince you first hand.

Joshua, is the lawyer you hope your business hires and you pray the other party doesn't. Calculated and in control, Joshua led our business' to victory in a payment related lawsuit. I have referred Joshua to other businesses to help with contracts and agreements. The consensus is Joshua is the right attorney to work with for nearly everything business related.

Mr. Miller handled a business litigation case for my family. There was a lot on the line financially for us. Adam was professional in every way. He helped calm our fears about the lawsuit and would answer and return our phone calls immediately. He had a solid strategy and was victorious in the end. We had already come to terms with a certain amount of money we would be out, but in the end, we weren't out any money and Adam's fees were very reasonable.

We needed a real estate attorney to help us work ourselves through a fairly complicated real estate deal that involved a properties purchase, modifying the existing property lines to new locations, placing deed restrictions on the remaining land to be sold and finally, a sale of the residual property to our new neighbors. Alex was pretty much a best case scenario. He was enthusiastic, forward thinking and finally, very reasonable with his billings. We are completely satisfied with our dealings with him, and recommend him without hesitation.

I suffered a dog bite that could have ended much worse than it did and left me with a scar. I had no insurance at the time and ended up with costly ER bills. I contacted John as I had no idea how to handle this complicated situation on my own. From day one, John was empathetic and reassuring that he'd do his best to help find a proper resolution. From my experience, I can tell he genuinely cares about the well-being of his clients. He was always ready to answer calls and kept me up to date during very complicated times. We recently wrapped up the situation and he was able to reach a resolution that we were both comfortable with. I really can't recommend John enough. If you ever find yourself in such an unfavorable situation as I did, reach out to John.

My wife suffered a traumatic incident in which a neighbor's pit bull dog killed our dog while she was on a walk and pushing our 1 year old in a stroller. We later came to learn that the pit bull dog had attacked another family that same day causing serious injuries. It was truly a horrific time for us not knowing if or how we could ever recover from this event. With John's help, we were able to pursue and ultimately reach a settlement with the homeowner's insurance company for our loss and suffering. John also helped me get the word out to the community, joining me at a neighborhood meeting that was organized to address concerns with dog attacks in the area. John is a true professional. He knows the law and he understands the process by which matters such as ours are resolved. This was tremendously valuable to us. John is honest, diligent, and forthcoming with his opinions yet maintains a steady and remarkable composure when dealing with a case. I am truly grateful that we found John to help us out.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Irvine, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
