Marin Cionca has a complete team of detailed oriented professionals working with him. He and his team have shown the utmost in excellent quality workmanship and alacrity. This is crucial in the patent process. They make the patent process very easy for the inventor. Their prompt, high quality approach allowed my 3 medical device patents to sail through the patent process. My questions were always answered fully and promptly every step of the way with genuine kindness.

CIONCA Law Group P.C. - Intellectual Property Law Pros: Honest, fair, determined, set rate, consistent contact Cons: Criminally unknown. More people need to know about this firm! By early 2011, I had just finished putting the finishing touches on my first invention. Thus I began the arduous look for a patent attorney. After becoming increasingly put off by the over aggressive, suspect, and out of my price range services of other patent attorneys that I had communicated with, I stumbled, by chance, upon Cionca Law Group P.C. I was immediately impressed by Mr. Cionca's transparency and integrity. Before I had decided to hire his firm, he gave me a free consultation, something that other firms wanted several hundred dollars for, explaining the ins and outs of the patent process, his services and whether or not his firm was right for me. Not once did he ask anything specific about my patent, again something I felt suspicious about from other firms (why ask me specific details if we aren't working together?), and I really got the feeling that Mr. Cionca was looking out for my best interest regardless of whether or not I chose to hire him; he wanted me to make an informed decision. So began our working relationship. After determining that my idea didn't infringe on any other patent or upcoming patent, we began work in earnest on mine. Stating that in order to have the best chance for my patent to stand up to both my patent examiner, and anyone looking to tweak it and claim the differences as a new patent, he had me “perfect” my claims. In an almost OCD like manner, we went back and forth several times on the written claims and the drawings. With each correspondence, Mr. Cionca would have me add, change, or refine my claims or my drawings, with the aim to traverse the “sweet spot” between a too generalized claim, and a too specific one. This would culminate in a submission for approval to the USPTO in late 2011. Several years later, my patent would go to the examiner for examination. Due to some misconceptions, my patent examiner did quite understand the scope of my invention. Mr. Cionca, and Ms. Kim would fight passionately for my patent using pathos, logos, and ethos arguments. Eventually my patent examiner would concede and I was granted a patent in early 2017! Overall, my experience with Cionca Law Group P.C. was fantastic. I personally would like to thank Mr. Cionca, Ms. Kim, and anyone else directly or indirectly working on my case. I am confident that I would not have been able to acquire my patent without your specific knowledge and passion, especially considering who I had as an examiner. I look forward to working with them again on future endeavors.

Marin helped me get 4 trrademarks and a patent. First he explained the process of obtaining trademarks and patents. Then he setup a roadmap to follow and explained the possible road blocks and how to handle each objective. Very easy to work with and patient the language used by the government can be confusing to a lay person. Marin will explain exactly what it means and put your mind at ease. He knows the USPTO system and he will help you navigate through it. I would highly recommend Marin and look forward to working with him again!

Mr. Miller handled a business litigation case for my family. There was a lot on the line financially for us. Adam was professional in every way. He helped calm our fears about the lawsuit and would answer and return our phone calls immediately. He had a solid strategy and was victorious in the end. We had already come to terms with a certain amount of money we would be out, but in the end, we weren't out any money and Adam's fees were very reasonable.

We needed a real estate attorney to help us work ourselves through a fairly complicated real estate deal that involved a properties purchase, modifying the existing property lines to new locations, placing deed restrictions on the remaining land to be sold and finally, a sale of the residual property to our new neighbors. Alex was pretty much a best case scenario. He was enthusiastic, forward thinking and finally, very reasonable with his billings. We are completely satisfied with our dealings with him, and recommend him without hesitation.

I suffered a dog bite that could have ended much worse than it did and left me with a scar. I had no insurance at the time and ended up with costly ER bills. I contacted John as I had no idea how to handle this complicated situation on my own. From day one, John was empathetic and reassuring that he'd do his best to help find a proper resolution. From my experience, I can tell he genuinely cares about the well-being of his clients. He was always ready to answer calls and kept me up to date during very complicated times. We recently wrapped up the situation and he was able to reach a resolution that we were both comfortable with. I really can't recommend John enough. If you ever find yourself in such an unfavorable situation as I did, reach out to John.

My wife suffered a traumatic incident in which a neighbor's pit bull dog killed our dog while she was on a walk and pushing our 1 year old in a stroller. We later came to learn that the pit bull dog had attacked another family that same day causing serious injuries. It was truly a horrific time for us not knowing if or how we could ever recover from this event. With John's help, we were able to pursue and ultimately reach a settlement with the homeowner's insurance company for our loss and suffering. John also helped me get the word out to the community, joining me at a neighborhood meeting that was organized to address concerns with dog attacks in the area. John is a true professional. He knows the law and he understands the process by which matters such as ours are resolved. This was tremendously valuable to us. John is honest, diligent, and forthcoming with his opinions yet maintains a steady and remarkable composure when dealing with a case. I am truly grateful that we found John to help us out.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Irvine, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
