Mulled this one over as to how I should approach this, but I've bit my tongue for far too long. I've known Zhana and Metis Law group for around now 3 years, and in recent discoveries, it has come to my attention how completely mishandled my case was -- but only in hindsight. I will tackle 3 corners of legal blunders of sorts: Incompetence Unprofessionalism Unethical practice Allow me to explain: Incompetence: Zhana failed to know that my apartment was under rent control. That is literally an establishing baseline procedure to determine not only how to approach any sorta litigation, but also extremely useful come time for settlement negotiation. For such a seasoned attorney she claims to be, I don't understand how should could fail something so fundamental. Boggles my mind. When confronting her on the issue, she deflected; passing it off with doing me a solid 'no good deed goes unpunished' instead of taking any sorta responsibility. This would be like a proclaimed scientist unable to point out Hydrogen on the periodic table. This would be like a personal injury attorney settling a case before retaining the at-fault parties insurance. Doesn't know important aspects of the law. She was blissfully ignorant in the procedures for a no-fault eviction, especially in the necessary right of return paperwork that must be filled 30 days onset of displacement. For someone who advertises as a tenant and eviction attorney, that's 50 percent true. Get this, she claimed ignorance for the law. 'How do I know what the state law is?' I'm representing you on habitability only. Yeah. Okay. But in this case they were kinda conjoined as one followed the other. Any reasonable/competent attorney would have been able to properly counsel on this issue. And if the previous was bad, this was worse. Possibly malpractice. Unprofessionalism: I suspect the incompetency is an outgrowth of caseload mismanagement. This is pure speculation, but I think her firm takes in way too many clients per year and they're legally spread thin. Why do I believe that? In many instances, it takes an absurd amount of time to respond to clients email. In a couple of instances, it took over 20 days time specifically for me. In other instances, the emails were just ignored completely. Unethical practice: In the late early to middle stages of my case, Zhana emailed me demanding the circumspection of emails I sent. This wasn't an informal request, she literally wanted me to sign it as if it's a legally binding contract. Who does this? This was grotesque and inappropriate. But you know what else is inappropriate? Her firm not doing their due-diligence/homework and knowing my unit was under rent-control. Maybe I didn't email enough questions apparently. In light of all the f-ups, plus the fact I was irreputably damaged as a result of her incompetence, the 45 percent take from my settlement is borderline usury. Zhana, if you're reading this, I am filing a bar complaint. Your dismissive attitude and snide remarks I shall not forget.

If anything is a testament to the brilliancy and legal acumen of Metis Law group, during mediation, the mediator informed both me and Zhana the settlement for my case was one of the highest he's ever seen given the nature of the main complaint. Unlike the corporate firms whose business model is sustained through a case load of high-volume but often low-settlement offers and less customization for clients , Zhana personalizes each case and actually puts in the work to get you, the client, the MAX settlement. This is the difference between a couple thousand dollars and a six-figure settlement. Zhana also answered several of my emails and calls a day in order to palliate and absorb my high-octane- stress levels from the psychological warfare of my disreputable landlord. Not only is Zhana an excellent attorney, but she also has become a friend to me too.

Metis Law has been so helpful to me and my family! They agreed to help us during a time where we were told there was zero hope in our renovation eviction case! Zhana and her team were able to succeed in getting us exactly what we needed. Metis law is the way to go no doubt!

I went to Ms. Badalyan after my accident. Not only was she easy to talk to but it really seemed like she cared about everything I had to say. But beyond this, she was extremely knowledgeable. I have a lot of friends who had hired other lawyers for their accidents and they were so upset because they were never kept in the loop about their case and their lawyers would not return their calls. I never had this issue with Ms. Badalyan which is why I recommend her. She was a pleasure to work with, she made a stressful situation easier but above all she was a wonderful advocate.

I went to Mrs. Badalyan for my personal injury case. She was very professional and listened to all of my needs very well. She was quick to resolve my case and went above and beyond in every regard. She got me way more than what I was looking for and she zealously defended my interests against a ruthless opposing attorney who did not want to play fair. She almost kept me in the loop very often throughout the entire process and was incredibly honest with me about everything. I could not have asked for more from an attorney. I would recommend her to everyone. I don't typically write reviews but I felt compelled to write this one because of how happy I was with her representation. Thank you for reading my review!

Christie Asselin Helped me in the Breach of Contract Claim. I had made a personal loan to a friend that stopped paying mid way through the payment schedule. From the beginning, Christie was a voice of confidence, professionalism, clarity, reliability and understanding. 10 minutes after my first conversation with her I felt very confident I had contacted the right person to help me deal with this emotional situation. For the first time in months, I felt that someone really WOULD be able to assist me, and she did. Due to a strong work ethic, Strong communication skills and a meticulous nature, She was able to keep this matter out of courtroom, and I am now receiving monthly checks again. Thank You Christie Asselin! I will definitely be recommending her services.

I had been traumatized by a prior lawyer who was a disaster, so I approached this with a lot of skepticism. But George and his team restored my faith. I cannot express how grateful I am to have been referred to George at Paijuk Law. After being involved in two rear-end accidents within the past two years—California drivers, right?—I was devastated and overwhelmed with stress. George and his team were incredibly attentive and communicative throughout the entire process. No headaches, no guesswork, and no need to push them to get things done. They were on top of everything, making the experience completely seamless. If you need a lawyer, do yourself a favor and contact Paijuk Law. You won’t regret it. Ya'll are amazing!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of La Crescenta, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
