There are some things people generally don’t look forward to—like being in a car accident or having to find a lawyer. However, discovering Josh was an incredible relief when it came to navigating the criminal justice system. This was my first time needing legal assistance, and from the very beginning, Josh and his team were there to help. I appreciated how they kept me informed with regular updates, making the entire process much less stressful.

Navigating the complexities of the criminal justice system was an overwhelming and anxiety-inducing experience for me, especially as someone who had never previously required legal assistance. From the moment I encountered Josh's profile online, it was evident that he was a beacon of knowledge for me. The initial article authored by Josh proved to be an invaluable resource, offering insight that significantly eased my concerns. I decided to explore further and ultimately reached out to Josh. His prompt response was indicative of his commitment to his clients. Our initial conversation was thorough and super helpful. Josh took the time to address my numerous questions with patience and expertise, providing me with a understanding of my situation and the various options available to me. In just a twenty-minute call, Josh provided me with knowledge far surpassing that which I had acquired through extensive research. His willingness to offer guidance without any expectation of compensation was a testament to his dedication to supporting his clients. Choosing to have Josh represent me was one of the best decisions I made. His approach to my case, combined with his commitment to keeping me informed, was truly exceptional. Josh ensured that I was updated on every development and never failed to respond to any email or message within a day. Despite a series of complications, he was able to secure an outstanding outcome for me during one of the most challenging times of my life. Josh's professionalism, combined with clear communication, provided me with a sense of security throughout the entire process. I cannot recommend Josh highly enough for anyone seeking legal representation. Thank you, Josh, for your unwavering support and for delivering results that far exceeded my expectations. Your service has made a significant difference in my life, and I am deeply grateful for your dedication and expertise.

As someone who was navigating the criminal justice system for the first time in my 60’s, facing false accusations, I was overwhelmed and anxious about the entire process. However, my experience with Wilkerson and Mulligan was nothing short of exceptional. From the moment I reached out to them, I was met with compassion, understanding, and a robust defense strategy. Forest Wilkerson and Joshua Mulligan, demonstrated an impressive depth of knowledge and a fierce dedication to justice. They were not only experienced and knowledgeable but also incredibly tough when it cam to defending my case. They took the time to explain every step of the process, ensuring that I was fully informed and comfortable with the proceedings. What stood out to me the most was their commitment to truth and integrity. In a system that can often feel impersonal and daunting, they fought tirelessly to ensure that my side of the story was heard and that my rights were protested. Their efforts resulted in the best possible outcome of my case, and I am profoundly grateful for their support during one of the most challenging times of my life. For anyone who finds themselves in a similar situation, falsely accused and unsure of where to turn, I wholeheartedly recommend Wilkerson & Mulligan. They will provide you with not only legal representation but also a sense of security and hope when you need it the most

Nobody wants to have to find a lawyer, but I am grateful to have come across Josh! I was able to retain Josh for a restraining order case and he was professional, knowledgeable and prompt in his communications. Though the situation was very stressful, he made the process a lot easier to get through. He was compassionate towards the severity of the case. With his professionalism and knowledge, we were able to win the case and I would highly recommend retaining Josh. -Cindy

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of La Quinta, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
