joe was my savior in a criminal gun possession case.my first lawyer said 90 days county jail ,first offense,no questions. and i paid for his counsel."NEVER HEARD OF EM" was joes response to his name when i sat down to retain his counsel.i was a single father, how can i do 90 days in county. i expressed my concerns to joe as far as my family, and wanting to "have some time "before i actually had to sit down and serve a sentence. joe understood.delay time to get things in order. oh, the kids? no problem, joe was able to get home detention to serve my 90. and it was a hard 90. getting things in order took 3 years. yeah i had to meet and greet every month at 850 bryant, but i got to see the legend operate. always wear a suit to court. i didnt one time and i thought the guy was gonna punch me. he was vocal about it.so after h.d. i checked in with the clerk to turn in paper work. i see everyone in line asking probation lengths. so when its my turn i do the same. no probation. uncle joe. i guess checkin in at the court house monthly for three years has its advantages.along with staying out of trouble. circumvention he called it. brilliant. and i got to pay him in payments. he can t fix your prior arrests or stupidy, he will tell you this. but give him a leg to stand on, and he'll kick ass with it. on his time. when he wants to. i tried to bring the guy some info that i thought may be pertinant to the case, he humored me,put it in his pocket. upon finishing our monthly court date he says"quit doin my job for me". i said "sh-- joe, somebodys gotta do it" and walked off smiling. the next month he missed court."emergency".i love it.so i got to watch everyone go before me, and get up and specially appear for joe o sullivan!!!! i shoulda stayed in school.needless to say , after that, i gave the man respect and room to work. and i have NO complaints. maybe it was just THE LUCK OF THE IRISH .joe aint jesus...but he was my savior.

Paceline Law was recommended to me by the highly-rated Bay Area Bicycle Law firm—and contacting them was the best choice. An avid cyclist himself, Kyle took the time to understand the bike accident I was involved in and provided suggestions on next legal steps. Overall, I'm highly satisfied with the provided service and thank Kyle for being an advocate for the local bike community.

Kyle handled my case where I was hit by a car and was seriously injured. I broke my C1 vertebrae and was in a halo vest for months. Kyle helped me and my family through the ordeal of getting fairly compensated for all the things that go along with this kind of life threatening injury. My settlement was much more than I expected and Kyle fought very hard with the other party's law firm to make sure that I was made whole. I trust Kyle and I would and still do seek Kyle's advice and assistance with legal matter, even beyond bicycle law. He gets my highest recommendation!

I was in my first ever bike accident with a vehicle in Alameda, and suffered injuries as well as damage to my bike. I spoke with several people seeking a bike injury lawyer, and Kyle at Paceline Law came highly recommended. Kyle beyond fantastic - he calmly walk me through the legal options in terms I could understand, which was crucial someone like me going through an accident for the first time. And importantly, he also secured a settlement for me. His counsel inspired confidence with me as a client, but he also connected as biker because it was evident he deeply cared for bikers and their legal rights. I would whole heartedly recommend Kyle and Paceline law for any Bay Area bike accident needs!

I have known Matt for nearly two years working on a contested probate case. He is diligent, smart and effective. I believe he is the only lawyer I have had that I could say with confidence is a "good person". He also is very sharp and to the point. I hired him after firing a disaster of an attorney. Matt is certainly the most competent attorney I have had.

Longtime friend (30 plus years) died, had left me everything in his will for the previous 15 years. In the last days of his life, his neighbor took him to an attorney to change the will to leave everything to her. Mr. Toth was able to get that last will overturned/nullified and got me what my friend wanted to have.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Lafayette, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
