Hired a forensic accountant but failed to apply the findings to help my case. Lost a Million Dollars. Old case, but one that deserves remembering. He made over $50,000 but was more concerned about his fees than my case. All of my settlement was in retirement annuities when I had children to raise and retirement was over 20 years away.

I've had a very bad experience by instructing Gary in-mid August 2021. At the first phone interview he was knowledgeable, eager to take on my case and seemed very confident in his strategy. This all fainted as soon as he got a retainer. He pushed the paperwork around and did little if anything at all. By mid-December and only because I was reading more on divorces, I learned that he hasn't submitted an important document. I asked for it to be submitted, it was promptly done, but by then I lost 3 months and potential payouts IRO 12K+. Fastforward to early March 2022 at a hearing, before and after Gary was calling my husband completely wrong name, moreover, he submitted the documents to the other side and the court with the same completely wrong name. In several emails he kept calling my husband this wrong name. I had to correct him, and the documents were re-done and re-sent. Moreover, he just denied the whole thing and I had to copy paste his own emails to prove him wrong. During the whole process with Gary, he would be asking the same questions about the same timeline that was discussed back in August 21 when the retainer was signed and kept billing for this "email correspondence". He seemed to be finding it difficult to grasp simple timeline / facts, mixing those continuously. His secretary was very efficient at billing. Following one of the hearings I asked Gary to see if we could settle and he would not wait for my responses to his emails, that would be literally several minutes. He would make his own decisions and talk / consult with the opposing attorney. This was a typical way he dealt with my case from the retainer. He would not ask for my opinion no for my input, would not explain the process. He was also socially awkward. I've never met with him in person. The only one time I did see him in his lobby, he knew who I was but never came over and talked, there were only 3 persons in the space at the time - his secretary, him and I. I should have fired him much sooner.

Hired Gary to handle my divorce case. The first free consultation went very well, and Gary seemed very helpful, knowledgeable and eager to get onto my case, but after I paid him he did nothing for my case put push paper. After 18K+ in his fees still nowhere near my case resolution. This Lawyer cares about people and not her pocket. I spoke with 5 other Attorney's who wanted to charge My wife and I three times the amount for our Trust. Attorney Natalie was very nice and accommodating to my wife schedule. We are very happy with her service and she will be our go-to attorney.

I own a small business with approx. 10 employees. I have had employment law issues which could have been very costly. I consulted with Kristine Karila about the issues my business was facing and she provided excellent advice and had a strategy for me to avoid any lawsuits. I have since consulted with Kristine on numerous occasions regarding my business’ employment law matters since California laws are very strict and constantly changing as well as difficult to know and understand. I highly recommend the Law Office of Kristine Karila. She is efficient, answers calls right away and knows California Employment law extremely well.

I am a 30-year business attorney in southern California. I have known Steve Zwick for 17 years. When I was injured in a car accident, I went to Steve for help. He and his team handled the procedural aspects of my case exceptionally well and he listened carefully to me about the pain I was suffering and the circumstances it caused in my life. He coordinated and directed me to the appropriate medical specialists to not only evaluate my condition, but to identify the specific source of my pain for purposes of long term resolution of it. He quite successfully advocated my right to compensation from all available angles. Steve is a caring person and a tenacious advocate. I trust his integrity, knowledge and experience to the point where I refer my clients who suffer personal injury to Steve for claim evaluation and prosecution.

I've used Mr Barnes for 2 legal issues with two different manufacturers. In both cases they were settled and handled in my favor with a lot of due diligence by Mr Barnes. One of them lasted almost a year and Mr Barnes never wavered from his position in representing me. God willing, I hope it doesn't happen again, but if it happens at third time you'll be my first call! I have referred him several times as well! He is always willing to take a call and is very open and honest.

Mr Barnes has represented 2 separate cases against a large manufacturer. Both cases were settled in my favor and funds were returned. Mr Barnes is quick to respond and follows through with little down time. I will continue to call upon him in the future and refer him to all my friends and family.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Laguna Hills, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
