Very responsive. Great at explaining things and outlining options, as well as explaining potential risks/benefits of those options. In this specific case worked very hard to reach a settlement out of court.

I noticed a local “OC Legal Self-Help Center” near where I work (been there for years but I never thought I would need them). So, I walked in, and it was the best thing I could have done. I was greeted by a friendly, intelligent woman named Sylvia Garcia, a Legal Document Assistant. Within fifteen minutes, she won me over! I won’t bore you with the details, but the final outcome was: my divorce was just finalized and in less than a year (would have been sooner but the courts didn’t have enough staff). She was easy to talk to, knows what she’s doing, well skilled and she will definitely get your job done! You will not be disappointed! Next step, I am hiring her to complete my new Living Trust and the cost is very affordable and I have no doubt that she will do a wonderful job for me again! Thank you Sylvia!

Some years back, Sylvia helped me with not one, but two legal filings. She provided very knowledgeable, professional guidance each time. In her hands, what had once seemed hard to achieve, was completed correctly and well presented to the court. I can not say enough about her skills, knowledge, and ability to understand legal processes. Thank you Sylvia!

Richard Young helped me navigate the worst time in my life. We made a game plan based off what I thought would have the most success plus his insight. He gave me some alternative ideas too with pros/cons. I felt like he would be as much of a shark as I wanted him to be. Unlike my marriage, everything went smooth with my divorce. I can’t say what it would cost in a full blown dragged out one, but my divorce was affordable and much less than what ppl I know have spent. He wasn’t sure my ex would go for what we asked, and I felt like he looked out for me in case it didn’t. Financially speaking. And other ways… such as… he added extra things that really protected me in the divorce contract that I won’t get into too much . But also,He also brought things up to help protect like life insurance for the kids, preschool costs, and alarm costa at our home. Things he got my ex to agree on as well . Some of this is because my ex chose ultimately to be amicable , but we still had to navigate through a lot of dicey subjects and feelings. When it was all settled we all did a happy dance and cheered. It was a fantastic day.

Lori is one of the best! Very straight forward and to the point. She gave me the advice I needed, as well as fought for me to get a fair settlement. Truly one of a kind! The rest of her staff was helpful as well, keeping us updated throughout the process.

C & H was recommended to me by Lawyers Title, and the recommendation was solid. Coby and his team handled the case professionally, efficiently, little involvement by me and collected the funds expeditiously after the Notice of Default was recorded. Just sent the check

Hired Coby Halavais to file a Notice of Default and to handle the subsequent process. Knew it was going to messy and challenging so I did not want to attempt it myself. I looked for someone knowledgeable that could deliver results. Coby exceeded my expectations. He kept everything on track and handled all aspects capably and efficiently which allowed me to have peace of mind. His expertise and negotiation skills ultimately allowed me to avoid a trustee sale and collect on my note. Definitely a great result!

While attempting to do my own Notice of Default on a judgment foreclosure (a fool for a client?), a search turned up Coby's reference. Initial consultation, laid out an aggressive plan (which included a lise pendance for an additional, as yet, unlitigated claim resulting in additional recovery following defendant's dismissed BK filing, in large part due Coby's strong objections) and remained firmly on top of the usual court system maneuvering. Property sold with 100% recovery of all principal, interest, post judgment, legal fees and court costs. This case was handled as well as any previous action I've been involved with. Highly recommend him to anyone needing his areas of expertise. Hoping to avoid further litigation, but would welcome his representation if necessary.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Lake Forest, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
