If I could give Angela 10 stars, I would. She is absolutely amazing! If you are looking for a lawyer in the Lake County or Sonoma area, I highly, highly recommend her. Not only is she extremely knowledgeable about the ins and outs of the law, but she is also incredibly kind! We all have dealt with lawyers that are, for lack of a better word, jerks, and kind of look their nose down at you. This is 100% not Angela. She is kind, down to earth, and very intelligent. But don’t let her kindness fool you, she is a bulldog in every sense of the word. She will fight for you, like you were her own flesh and blood. One of the worst things that could happen to you, is being accused of a crime. I myself faced a bogus charge from a jilted ex lovers new fiancé. This charge had the ability to take my career for me, and Angela made sure that did not happen. Court dates and court matters bring a huge amount of stress, but with Angela handling my case, I was able to take a breath and focus on work and my home life, and still know that my case was in the most capable of hands. Lake county is a small place, but we are genuinely lucky to have such a big-time lawyer call this place home! If you’ve made it this far into this review, what are you waiting for, call her today! You are going to want somebody behind you that genuinely cares, who doesn’t see you as another number. Angela is the real deal; intelligent, kind, and a genuine bada** when it comes to fighting for your rights!!!

Angela Carter is an incredibly compassionate and empathetic person. She is also an excellent attorney. She expressed deep concern for what I had been through and turned an embarrassing and upsetting situation into something I could use to learn and grow. For years unfortunate circumstances and stressful life events pushed me in and out of a dark place with addiction. Getting out of that harmful cycle was like a puzzle. I was horrified when my inability to cope in a healthy way put me on the wrong side of the law, on more than one occasion. I came to her office feeling defeated and Angela was with me every step of the way. Today I’m on a path of healing and Angela was instrumental in helping me get there.

Angela absolutely encompassed all that anyone would hope for in an attorney. She managed to calm my nerves, explain how she felt things might go, and everything thing happened as she said…. and more so. She’s absolutely brilliant and a bright star for the Lake County community. She just makes it a better place. She not only did what she said she was going to do… but far beyond and I am so very grateful. 🙏

I hired Thomas Quinn in Aug 2016 to defend me in a civil case brought by the prior owner of my house that claimed I didn't pay for it. Tom was proficient at both filing and gathering relevant documents for the court. He came to my house a few times to interview and prepare my witnesses. The trial went for 3 days before a jury of 8 people in May 2017. Tom has experience selecting juries and is familiar with the people and proceedings of the court. He speaks and dresses well, is very organized, and was well prepared for my trial. The trial ended with all the jury voting in my favor! Then the case went to the Appeals Court in San Francisco in April 2018. We were not required to attend but we went because Tom is extra cautious. The case was recently dismissed from there. Tom tells me there's still more to come. I believe that with his continued help the eventual conclusion will be positive. I highly recommend Mr. Thomas Quinn's legal services!!!

I was I was referred to Edward Savin by a friend he successfully represented in a criminal case. My case had to do with resolving a debt collection matter. I found Mr. Savin to be a skillful strategist and very adept at negotiation. The case was settled for a fraction of what I might have had to pay. I appreciated his empathy as well as the tenaciousness with which he approached my case.

In 1997 Mr. Savin guided me through the process and represented me in a divorce/custody case. His representation resulted in receiving full custody of my son ... My son is now 21 and a success.. Thank you Edward for your passion for what's right and your guidance in a very difficult time in my life.

If you’re searching for an intelligent and honest attorney; look no further. After my mother’s passing, my wife and I wasted a lot of money with two big city attorneys trying to settle my mother’s estate, due to an issue with her Living Trust. After 2 years of frustration, I finally found Dennis Fordham. He solved and corrected the problem within 6 months for a very reasonable price. My wife and I were so pleased with Mr. Fordham’s professionalism, that we are now collecting our financials together, so that he can set up a Living Trust for us (problem free for our children)! - Bob Morrison

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Lakeport, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
