She helped my ex husband take my children from me and deny me hundreds of thousands of dollars I was entitled to because I was supposedly “on drugs” which were antidepressants but they made me “crazy”. The truth is I had no lawyer and was misdiagnosed by said ex husband as bipolar and was on many meds I never should have been on for nearly 2 decades. I am now off all meds (minus a mild prescription allergy med that is stronger than OTCs but doesn’t make me drowsy.) except maybe an occasional Aleve for neck and spinal arthritis. I am owed well over $150,000 that she managed to manipulate me out of. Now I find out she’s DISBARRED!?!? My ex has had a talent of finding exceptional women. I admit I wasn’t a gem. But Guerin??? And his current wife??? Either one are way worse than I ever was. He has always had a nose for crazy b*******.

IT WAS EMOTIONAL AND TERRIBLE. I HAD TO RETAIN ANOTHER ATTORNEY TO HANDLE MY LEGAL MATTERS Of FACT, I PAID HER ALMOST 10, 000 DOLLARS FOR PRACTICALLY DOING NOTHING. WHEN I MET WITH HER AND POINTED OUT HER BROKEN PROMISES ON MY CASE I WITNESSED ANOTHER SIDE OF HER TRUE PERSONALITY. SHE COMES ACROSS CARING AND NICE, BUT AFTER SHE GET A RETAINER AND YOU'RE BAITED SHE DOES NOTHING. WRITE USELESS LETTERS, MAKE PJONE CALLS AND NOTHING MORE. I COULD GO ON, BUT JUST DO YOUR DUE DILIGENCE. AS I STATED, THE NEW ATTORNEY, DID THE WORK AND FOLLOWED THROUGH ON HER COMMITMENTS AND SETTLE THE CASE WHICH WENT TOTALLY IN MY FAVOR. I WOULD NEVET RECOMMEND HER OFFICE TO REPRESENT ANYONE. THANK God SOMEONE REFERRED ME TO A LAW FIRM TRULY BASED ON PROFESSIONALISM. I FILED A ETHICS COMPLAINT. I COULD GO ON, BUT JUST MAKE SURE YOU GET EVERYTHING IN WRITING AND DEADLINES EVERY STEP OF THE WAY. WATCH OUT FOR HER CONSTANT LETTER WRINGS AND TELEPJONE CALLS, WHICH WERE UNNECESSARY.

In December 2020 I retained the Law Office of Attorney Guerin Butterworth in my divorce case. And that was the worst mistake that I could have made during a most vulerable time in my life! I would strongly suggest to anyone who might decide to retain her office to really interview other attorneys before making a decision. This is now 2021 the last day in July, and she did nothing, but ran up fees. I discovered Attorney Butterworh had not filed any of my documents with the court, did not honor her word of filing for temporary spousal support and the list could go on and on. I paid her close to $10,000 with no concrete results. My divorce was not a complicated one with child support or property involvement. It was very simple. I paid my spouse out the home and the rest should have been simple. Unfortunately, it was not, because of the way Attorney Guerin botched up my case. Her office staff, Cheryl whom she depends upon was rude, make several mistakes on the monthly billings which I made her aware. She had to remove and reverse several of her mistakes. Yes, I did check out the Attorney's licesnce and read the reviews. The review about her staff Cheryl was not good. On the initial meeting I asked her about Cheryl and stated to her about the negative review. Attorney Butterworth stated that Cheryl no longer worked for her office, and she had retired. That was so not true! When i question her about the promises she had made as it related to filing for emergency spousal support she became defensivce. Even in her billings which in my opinion was egregious. She used up almost $10,000 in phone calls, emails and she had not done nothing! She demanded that I give her another $5,000 to continue the case, and when I refused based upon not being satified with what she had not done, I saw a whole different Attorney behavior. I have never had an experience like this before with a Attorney. Oh, and do not be swayed with her hourly rate, because in the end I paid out dearly and received noting. It was my husband attorney that even pushed for the partial settlement agreement payout for our home. There was no fighting between us over the home or furnishings. This was not a problem, because he deserved his share of equity in the home. Attorney Butterworth wanted to just drag the case out for her benefit to get as much money as possible from me. If this will help sombody else to avoid what I went through then writing this review is well worth it. Now I have to find another Attorney to complete what she did not do and pay out more money. However, this has made me wiser before I retain any attorney from this experience. I need to mention that when I became aware of what she and Cheryl were doing with the billing she refused to meet and discuss my concerns unless I gave her more money. Do NOT be mislead by the smile and that good old, I will advocate for you. It just did not happen for me. Attorney Butterworth really disappointed me and I told her so. I definitely believe in being upfront and honest with people I do business with. I am grateful my adult son was with me on every meeting to witness all the conversations. It's a shame Attorneys who fail to perform their legal obligations under oath and represent the people that retain them should be disbared. I am out of $7900 and still no resolve. You do the months and the math, and it just does not add up. Please keep up with every document you provide to her office. She would ask me for the same documents over and over. and again, watch the billing her office provide, keep a record of everything she does and be sure she notifies you before every decisions is made on your behalf if you decide to retain her services. Good luck!

Guerin is an amazing Lawyer!! One of the few good lawyers left in my opinion. First off she not only cares about her clients but actually focuses on the best interest of the child IN THE LONG TERM. She is not in the business of running up the bill but looks for a way to mediate a fair settlement. I wish I would of found her years ago.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Long Beach, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
