After I got into a car accident, I contacted the services of a law firm through word of mouth and it was one of the worst decisions I have ever made!!! They represented me so poorly that I had no choice but to look for representation elsewhere. I found amazing reviews online about the MOVAGAR & YAMIN, P.L.C. Law Firm and initially I spoke to another lawyer, Brian, who spent his own time hearing all the details of my case despite that he could not represent me just so that he could refer me to Steven who was a better match for my case. With all the odds against me in this case due to the lack of communication and misinformation provided to me by the first law firm, Steven did more than what I believe was necessary to get me what was justly deserved. He was very thorough, always followed up with every new detail in regards to my case, and responded quickly whenever I had questions or concerns. I cannot recommend his service enough!! My case finally came to an end after a long 2 years and I cannot express how thankful I am to have met Steven, if only he was my lawyer from the beginning then my hardships would not have been so tiresome!! Now that I have hands on experience with what a difference having a great lawyer by your side makes, I will continue to highly recommend Steven's services to anyone who is looking for an amazing representation or is unhappy with their current law firm and demands better representation!

Nick Movaghar and Steve Yamin were both amazing at everything they did to help me both emotionally and financially. Seriously, even when I asked them a million questions that were unnecessary… just because I was worried about whatever it was, they still handled everything so professionally and they were just really helpful with everything… the car accident, the shop I got my car repaired at, the hospital, the therapy clinic, not to mention ALL the paperwork and ALL the medical bills were handled properly and correctly. These 2 guys ARE the best lawyers in LA when it comes to dealing with a car accident and a neck & back injury… I'm sure they deal with more cases than just that… But I am speaking strictly from my point of view and my case. I'm telling you all now, Nick Movaghar and Steve Yamin are the way to go! You can trust them 120%. -Elie

I had a legal issue that needed immediate attention. Mr. Yamin was extremely helpful and knowledgeable about my specific legal issue. He took the time to explain all the pros and cons of my case to me. He didn't sugar coat anything and was very frank about the strengths and weaknesses of my case. I found that refreshing. Mr. Yamin and his firm fought vigorously to advance my position, kept me informed with periodic updates and answered all my questions, even the ones I thought were elementary. In the end, Mr. Yamin was able to use the leverage he gained for me through legal maneuvering to achieve a fantastic settlement for me. I would recommend him to all my friends and family.

Steve Yamin is awesome. Before working with Steve, I was racked with anxiety about how to deal with my negligent landlord. Even though I had proof that things didn't work properly at the home, and had a legal right to get them fixed, my landlord's lawyer sent me multiple harassing letters stating that I owed THEM costs and they threatened to evict me. I was worried. Even though I had read up on my rights and responsibilities, I wasn't 100% clear about how they might play out in front of a judge. And I certainly didn't want an eviction (or the cost of yet another move) to tarnish my excellent credit and bankrupt me. The fear of how much a good lawyer might cost me had me paralyzed. After some research, I found Steve Yamin. As soon as I had my first phone call with Steve, I gained tremendous peace of mind that took me from a frantic, frightened state, to one where the sky began to brighten in my favor. Since I couldn't initially forecast where my case would land, knowing that I wasn't going to be financially wiped out in the process was a huge factor in deciding to hire a lawyer. I discovered that Steve's incredible legal work and representation, as well as the first-rate service he consistently delivers, make him a rare find. Driven by a motivation to build a world-class law practice, he offers his clients "big firm" quality on all the work he does, while giving them the attention and responsiveness that only smaller firms can give. In my experience with attorneys, this is really rare! From the get-go, Steve was extremely polite and courteous, while being highly responsive. He always made himself available to my myriad questions, helped me set a targeted course, managing my expectations (and stress) at every step. As I quickly learned, Steve has a sharp mind and a keen understanding of California Real Estate Law. He was an incredible ally and helped me to identify what my situational strengths were, and how to strategically navigate around the issues that were not in my favor. He was straightforward with me and gave me a complete 360-degree understanding of my position, the stakes and my options. His communications with the opposing counsel were firm and his sharp tactics guided and primed me to flip the tables, putting me in a powerful position to successfully counter sue my landlord. In less than one year, I went from: Thinking I would have to have to pay a few extra thousand dollars to my landlord for his lawyer fees, eat the cost of another move and have my credit ruined …TO….Winning a case against my landlord and being awarded over $10,000 in damages (as well as full payment to cover my move & all MY lawyers fees). I couldn't believe it. If you are researching real estate attorneys, if you are unsure about how much a good attorney can help you, or if you are on the fence about hiring an ally, don't let the FEAR of costs prevent you from winning *more* than you thought possible. Consider the empowerment that Steve Yamin's representation can bring you and your case.

I found Atty. Alix on google and just tried to inquire about my immigration status. She was very helpful as she tried to explain everything to me that is accordance to the law and her experience as an immigration attorney. It gave me a breather because I can totally depend on her guidance and expertise and not to merely depend on hearsays or what we read on the internet. I highly recommend this attorney as she is very prompt and respond quickly on emails. I wish her more luck and success!

From the first call with Anna, I felt supported and heard, which was important to me given the nature of my case. Anna was realistic and honest in providing her opinion, while still maintaining empathy and taking great care to make sure my asks were represented. She navigated my case meticulously, and I felt empowered to have someone of her calibre by my side. As a young person with no experience, Anna spent many phone calls working through questions I had and explaining the nuances of different elements I was confused about. She always had suggestions and explanations which I appreciated, and helped me understand the rhythm of the process. We were able to reach a speedy conclusion and I am so grateful to have found such a wonderful attorney despite the circumstances that led me to her!

In addition to being exceptional at her job and incredibly professional, Anna handled my case with great empathy and patience. I'm sure a lot of the people she represents come into the situation with a lot of stress and anxiety - I sure did. She walked me through the process, laid out my options, and answered every single one of my questions with zero judgement. It's been an interesting "silver lining" to have such delightful interactions with Anna in the midst of all of this. Having Anna advocate for me brought so much peace into my life during a time of stress and I can't recommend her enough. Thank you again for your expertise and time!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Los Angeles, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
