I had the privilege of working with Thomas Sands, and I can’t recommend him highly enough. His professionalism, expertise, and dedication to my case were truly outstanding. From the very beginning, he took the time to explain every step of the process in clear, understandable terms, ensuring I was always informed and comfortable with the decisions being made. His attention to detail and strategic thinking helped us achieve a successful outcome, and his genuine care for his clients sets him apart from other lawyers I’ve worked with. If you’re looking for a lawyer who is not only knowledgeable but also compassionate and dedicated, Thomas Sands is the one you need.

Unless you want Thomas Sands to try and attend your court hearing and some one else’s at the same time remotely, I suggest you read my experience below. I had previously left a review in February stating some positives of this Law Firm which I had to delete and cannot honor. After my experience in May, I hope I can help prevent someone from experiencing the same frustrations and lack of professionalism. Initially this firm helped me with my Child Support hearing. Overall for that aspect of the case, The Sands Law Group was helpful and responsive, the case itself was very straight forward as Child Support Services through La County was also involved and I hired Thomas as backup since the other party had an attorney as well. I had retained this Law Firm to get custody orders finalized and about 30 days after child support was finalized, I was served with Custody papers from the other party as well. Copies were emailed to Thomas and his team to go over the next steps as I had no issues with the initial representation so I was confident in having them complete the custody aspect as well. Unfortunately this is where my whole experience started to falter. Updates became far and few unless I reached out to the team and only after about 2 emails I would receive an update on the paperwork from one of the paralegals. 3 days before my scheduled court hearing, I reached out to Thomas and his team to find out what was going on with paperwork and why my response had not be finalized from the paperwork I had been served prior. Thomas’s team filed my response 2 days before the court hearing which is not proper notice and could have allowed the other party to request an extension. The other party did not want an extension even though they had not been given the proper time for review and we proceeded with the court hearing. At which point Mr. Sands was attempting to attend mine and another clients virtually at the same time! I was in utter shock and disbelief that my attorney whom I was trusting to go through my custody case, was trying to double dip court rooms at the same time. The judge was extremely frustrated and I ended up speaking for myself through 90% of my hearing to end up with such vague custody orders, I am already having to request a modification myself. The paperwork was just typed up and filed with the court on August 1st! Almost 2 and a half months to get the paperwork finalized. My case may have been a small non money maker for Thomas and perhaps that’s why I didn’t receive the care and concern, however the custody of my child is my whole life and I was made a fool by this firm.

I found Atty. Alix on google and just tried to inquire about my immigration status. She was very helpful as she tried to explain everything to me that is accordance to the law and her experience as an immigration attorney. It gave me a breather because I can totally depend on her guidance and expertise and not to merely depend on hearsays or what we read on the internet. I highly recommend this attorney as she is very prompt and respond quickly on emails. I wish her more luck and success!

From the first call with Anna, I felt supported and heard, which was important to me given the nature of my case. Anna was realistic and honest in providing her opinion, while still maintaining empathy and taking great care to make sure my asks were represented. She navigated my case meticulously, and I felt empowered to have someone of her calibre by my side. As a young person with no experience, Anna spent many phone calls working through questions I had and explaining the nuances of different elements I was confused about. She always had suggestions and explanations which I appreciated, and helped me understand the rhythm of the process. We were able to reach a speedy conclusion and I am so grateful to have found such a wonderful attorney despite the circumstances that led me to her!

In addition to being exceptional at her job and incredibly professional, Anna handled my case with great empathy and patience. I'm sure a lot of the people she represents come into the situation with a lot of stress and anxiety - I sure did. She walked me through the process, laid out my options, and answered every single one of my questions with zero judgement. It's been an interesting "silver lining" to have such delightful interactions with Anna in the midst of all of this. Having Anna advocate for me brought so much peace into my life during a time of stress and I can't recommend her enough. Thank you again for your expertise and time!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Los Angeles, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
