The short: Vera Weisz is smart, experienced, knowledgeable, responsive and compassionate. I highly recommend her. The long: Someone referred Vera Weisz to me during the 14th year of my immigration journey. After spending tens of thousands of dollars on attorneys and 3 separate, unsuccessful applications for legal status, I found myself in immigration court. The referrer said that if Vera accepted my case, I could rest assured that I would not get deported. Well, they were right because this is year 18 of the journey and I finally see a light at the end of the dark tunnel (and it's not an oncoming train but an approval from USCIS). Vera Weisz is extremely experienced. She proposed several paths that I was eligible for, that none of the previous attorneys suggested. It has not been smooth sailing but Vera has been patient - she gets right to work to put the case back on track. My case did not have much evidence to work with but Vera proposed very smart solutions that only an experienced and knowledgeable attorney could. When we go to court, I feel protected. She has a calm and cool demeanor about her, but her presence is felt and she asserts herself when needed. The opposition attorney once suggested that I wait my case out of the US. She shut him up quickly (with facts) like his suggestion was crazy. Now, how do you not want an attorney like that! She is very thorough and we have never missed a deadline. She clearly communicates what is expected of me and guides me through all the details. I have found Vera to be compassionate and she has had empathy for my situation from day 1. I have made mistakes in the past that even I still judge myself for, but Vera listened to me and did not tell me what I shoulda, woulda, coulda. No judgement from her. She is very professional but also has a sense of humor that doubles as words of wisdom. She has said a thing or two to me that seemed funny in the moment but turned out to be food for deep thought later on. At the time that I retained Vera, she was more expensive than most and I struggled to make the payments. She was flexible and provided a payment plan. Her office is located right in the heart of downtown LA. Her front office staff is respectful, responsive and communicative. My point is...it costs money to run an efficient office so I respect her fees. For the value that I have received and continue to receive from Vera, I am very fortunate that she accepted my case.

After spending tens of thousands of Dollars with a lot of cowboy lawyers (12 years in total), I luckily was introduced to Vera. For me, Vera is a real LIFE SAVER. In a matter of 8 months, Vera made all necessary requests to the INS in reference to our case and we were finally invited to an interview for our green card. Once again, we were shielded by her professional approach and the interview went ease and with positive outcome. Sooner after that we received all our papers and next year we will become American citizens. Do not let headless commentaries about who was wearing what divert your attention to what really matters. Vera is precise, professional, knowledgeable, with great experience – 3 decades of practice – and will not take your case if she feels that she won’t bring you benefit. Actually, if Vera cannot get a solution for your case, probably, no one else will. Go ahead and make an appointment. This will help you understand your situation in this country.

Mrs. Vera Weisz was representing a friend of mine. In support I accompanied him to the hearing. Upon meeting Mrs. Weisz for the first time outside of the courtroom she immediately commented on my choice of clothing. Her tone of voice was loud and patronizing! I was in shock and in disbelief by her bad manners. I was wearing a knee length black skirt and a white blouse with a scarf. There was absolutely nothing inappropriate about my attire. I am business woman and a nurse. I know very well what is professional and what is not. Although she was representing my friend it was embarrassing to everyone. She FAILED to take in to account she was wearing an old shaggy sweater and she looked like she just got out of bed. To make matters worse she was 1 hour late. Even the judge inquired as to her whereabouts. I am submitting this merely to help someone else avoid misrepresentation.

I found Atty. Alix on google and just tried to inquire about my immigration status. She was very helpful as she tried to explain everything to me that is accordance to the law and her experience as an immigration attorney. It gave me a breather because I can totally depend on her guidance and expertise and not to merely depend on hearsays or what we read on the internet. I highly recommend this attorney as she is very prompt and respond quickly on emails. I wish her more luck and success!

From the first call with Anna, I felt supported and heard, which was important to me given the nature of my case. Anna was realistic and honest in providing her opinion, while still maintaining empathy and taking great care to make sure my asks were represented. She navigated my case meticulously, and I felt empowered to have someone of her calibre by my side. As a young person with no experience, Anna spent many phone calls working through questions I had and explaining the nuances of different elements I was confused about. She always had suggestions and explanations which I appreciated, and helped me understand the rhythm of the process. We were able to reach a speedy conclusion and I am so grateful to have found such a wonderful attorney despite the circumstances that led me to her!

In addition to being exceptional at her job and incredibly professional, Anna handled my case with great empathy and patience. I'm sure a lot of the people she represents come into the situation with a lot of stress and anxiety - I sure did. She walked me through the process, laid out my options, and answered every single one of my questions with zero judgement. It's been an interesting "silver lining" to have such delightful interactions with Anna in the midst of all of this. Having Anna advocate for me brought so much peace into my life during a time of stress and I can't recommend her enough. Thank you again for your expertise and time!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Los Angeles, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
