I have been involved in a contentious custody dispute with my daughters father. We were never married. My daughter is 8 years old now. Several years ago the court awarded sole legal and physical custody to me based upon substantiated findings of domestic violence. Recently, my daughters father filed a motion for change of custody. The court appointed Randi Susan Klein as minors counsel to represent the best interest of my daughter. Ms. Klein interviewed my daughter, myself and her father privately. She read through documents in the court file, as well as other pleadings my lawyer sent to her. When we arrived in court, I had no idea what her recommendation was going to be. Ms. Klein recommended in my favor. She explained to the Judge, step by step, why my daughter should remain in my custody. While she was talking, the judge was carefully listening to her. He was shaking his head in agreement. As a result of Ms. Klein's hard work and presentation, the judge dismissed the fathers motion. I was so relieved that I cried tears of joy. Ms. Klein was a very strong voice for my child and she was well prepared. I am so grateful that the court appointed her to be my daughters lawyer.

My daughter is involved in a contentious custody battle with her child's father.  Her daughter, my grand-daughter, is 8 years old. There was a court hearing this morning. I went with my daughter to court this morning to support her.   When my grand daughter was very young, her father beat my daughter and threatened to take my grand daughter away from her. My grand daughter witnessed the beatings. My grand daughter is still in therapy sorting out how this affected her.  The father also prevented me from seeing my grand daughter until she was 9 months old.  Eventually my daughter got civil and criminal restraining orders against the father. Now he is only allowed supervised visits. Recently the father filed a motion for change of custody. The court appointed Randi Susan Klein as minors counsel to represent my grand daughter. Today was the hearing for the court to rule on the father's motion. Ms. Klein was a very strong advocate for my grand daughter. She explained to the court, in a very logical and passionate way, why my granddaughter should remain in my daughter's custody.  Neither my daughter nor myself knew, ahead of time, what Ms. Klein would be recommending to the court. She was eloquent. She understood both the legal and the emotional issues and explained how that impacted our family. I cried when I listed to her in court. The court dismissed the father's motion for a change of custody. I am very relieved and very grateful to Ms. Klein. Because of her hard work and commitment, my granddaughter will continue to be safe and to get the professional help that she needs.  Ms. Klein was amazing & did a Great job, I Highly recommend her for anyone seeking Minors Counsel, she is the Best !!! Thank you❤️

Randi Klein wastes no time! I am truly grateful for all her help in our guardianship/custody case. She is direct and very helpful, even going out of her way to accommodate her clients. I really appreciated the attention and care to detail she gave to our case. If you are in a situation, she is definitely reliable and does not take any of the run-around. If you can get her to represent you, please do so, she is awesome!

I consulted Randi Klein for a complicated child custody case and to acquire knowledge of what to expect in mediation. Randi supplied UNCOMPLICATED information which is very pertinent in child custody hearings. I received more relevant advice and information in our 1 hour phone consultation than I received from my previous attorneys in 6 months. I would recommend consulting Randi if you need clarity, clear cut counsel in your case.

I found Atty. Alix on google and just tried to inquire about my immigration status. She was very helpful as she tried to explain everything to me that is accordance to the law and her experience as an immigration attorney. It gave me a breather because I can totally depend on her guidance and expertise and not to merely depend on hearsays or what we read on the internet. I highly recommend this attorney as she is very prompt and respond quickly on emails. I wish her more luck and success!

From the first call with Anna, I felt supported and heard, which was important to me given the nature of my case. Anna was realistic and honest in providing her opinion, while still maintaining empathy and taking great care to make sure my asks were represented. She navigated my case meticulously, and I felt empowered to have someone of her calibre by my side. As a young person with no experience, Anna spent many phone calls working through questions I had and explaining the nuances of different elements I was confused about. She always had suggestions and explanations which I appreciated, and helped me understand the rhythm of the process. We were able to reach a speedy conclusion and I am so grateful to have found such a wonderful attorney despite the circumstances that led me to her!

In addition to being exceptional at her job and incredibly professional, Anna handled my case with great empathy and patience. I'm sure a lot of the people she represents come into the situation with a lot of stress and anxiety - I sure did. She walked me through the process, laid out my options, and answered every single one of my questions with zero judgement. It's been an interesting "silver lining" to have such delightful interactions with Anna in the midst of all of this. Having Anna advocate for me brought so much peace into my life during a time of stress and I can't recommend her enough. Thank you again for your expertise and time!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Los Angeles, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
