WOW is the first word that comes to mind about Warren.  I had a tough case fighting for custody of my teenager.  It is hard to enforce custody orders when your child is older and it was imperative to have enforceable orders as the clock was running out.  His orders along with Ex Parte's to get the job done in the shortest time we could do, were amazing.  Warren knew just the orders to ask for that were enforceable.  If you are coming from your heart as a parent for the best interest of your child, taking steps towards that goal consistently and with determination. Warren can help you move forward as soon as possible for the best interest of your child.  I highly recommend him so very much!!

Mr Shiell recently represented me for almost one year in a prolonged, complicated, legal action to reduce and or eliminate my alimony obligation. Warren is extremely knowledgeable, fair, responsive, wise, and very experienced with a chaotic legal system. He knew which additional experts were critical to the successful resolution of my case. Although Warren gives the appearance of being very calm and "laid back" he is a tough negotiator and always represented my best interests against a team of lawyers who were aggressive and extremely confrontational. I value Warren's advice and in retrospect, he was 100% accurate in all the information he conveyed to me in a timely fashion. Warren's billing was honest and fair. Thankfully, my alimony "battle" is now behind me with a successful resolution thanks to the expertise of Mr Shiell. Based on my personal experience, I highly recommend Warren Shiell!

Warren is an excellent attorney. Last year he represented me in an international move away case. I moved back to South Korea with my children and Warren successfully won a trial in which the Los Angeles Court decided that the case and custody was better decided by a Korean Court. He was well prepared, highly organized, knowledgeable about the law and procedures. In Korea, I won custody of my children and I have sole custody. There can be no enough rating for his wonderful service and for this excellent lawyer. I strongly recommend Warren as an attorney.

I was represented in a very complicated matter by Mr. Shiell this year that involved international law, custody and paternity issues. The father had hired a big name expensive lawyer who went to court and requested extremely unfair orders that would have devastated my life. I found Mr. Shiell's office to be very professional, courteous and attentive to my concerns. His hourly rates were less than the other side, and his bills were reasonable in light of the difficulty of the case and the results he achieved. He was referred to me by a leading international family lawyer in New York because of the international aspects of the case and I am very grateful to that lawyer for the referral. I was very much overwhelmed by the uncertainties of the case and was also dealing with some medical complications of the pregnancy itself. Mr. Shiell navigated these issues better than I could have ever imagined. Mr. Shiell worked hand in hand with me to develop a complex legal strategy to defeat the father's claims. It involved consulting with experts in another country and also consulting with reproductive technology experts. At every step of the process, Mr. Shiell consulted with me and explained what was going on. Whenever I had any questions, he always promptly responded. He really went above and beyond to help me figure out my best strategy. In the end, he put together such a strong case that only 2-3 days after the other party received our response, they dropped the case entirely, with prejudice. It's hard to believe that only two months before I hired Mr. Shiell, I was in a desperate predicament with very few options and now, thanks to Mr. Shiell, I am free from all of that and able to move on with my life. Mr. Shiell's office saved me from years of headache and heartache and I will forever be grateful for his outstanding representation.

I have been a family law forensic CPA for over a dozen years and I have been privileged to have worked with many of the best family law attorneys in the Los Angeles area. I count Warren Shiell among these best lawyers. He is a highly intelligent and skilled attorney. From my point of view, working both on his team and against his team, Warren Shiell does an excellent job zealously and reasonably representing his clients' interests. On cases in which I have been involved with Warren Shiell, he is professional, attentive to detail, responds in a timely fashion, and always carefully supervises his expert’s work. Also based on my knowledge of quality family lawyers, his legal rates are exceptionally reasonable given his expertise and experience. Warren Shiell seeks to resolve his cases with the appropriate level of work. Warren Shiell uses his sound judgment in advising his clients which issues are worth fighting for (or defending against) and which issues are not. Bottom line: I do not hesitate to recommend Warren Shiell.

I found Atty. Alix on google and just tried to inquire about my immigration status. She was very helpful as she tried to explain everything to me that is accordance to the law and her experience as an immigration attorney. It gave me a breather because I can totally depend on her guidance and expertise and not to merely depend on hearsays or what we read on the internet. I highly recommend this attorney as she is very prompt and respond quickly on emails. I wish her more luck and success!

From the first call with Anna, I felt supported and heard, which was important to me given the nature of my case. Anna was realistic and honest in providing her opinion, while still maintaining empathy and taking great care to make sure my asks were represented. She navigated my case meticulously, and I felt empowered to have someone of her calibre by my side. As a young person with no experience, Anna spent many phone calls working through questions I had and explaining the nuances of different elements I was confused about. She always had suggestions and explanations which I appreciated, and helped me understand the rhythm of the process. We were able to reach a speedy conclusion and I am so grateful to have found such a wonderful attorney despite the circumstances that led me to her!

In addition to being exceptional at her job and incredibly professional, Anna handled my case with great empathy and patience. I'm sure a lot of the people she represents come into the situation with a lot of stress and anxiety - I sure did. She walked me through the process, laid out my options, and answered every single one of my questions with zero judgement. It's been an interesting "silver lining" to have such delightful interactions with Anna in the midst of all of this. Having Anna advocate for me brought so much peace into my life during a time of stress and I can't recommend her enough. Thank you again for your expertise and time!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Los Angeles, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
