Debra White is a magnificent criminal defense attorney. Throughout an uphill long battle I had with a severe personal matter. Debra was able to communicate to the justice system with what is true and what was not. She was able to navigate in a precise manner while utilizing laws that have passed recently in our favor. Debra communicates on a timely manner dependent on your situation and would never leave you in tight spot where you are left high and dry like most of many attorneys. I have already recommended her to a great family friend of mine which she has already produced amazing results for. Debra is really on top of her practice. I am happy to say I would voice or refer this law office to anyone! Debra thank you for all you have done for me & my family.

Super Lawyer Debra S. White is personable, professional, and communicates clearly to her client, their family and the court. She always appears in court prepared--and she never drops the ball. Observing her in court hearings, even when seemingly nothing of import was happening, Debra set the case groundwork and pushed the pea forward towards her envisioned positive outcome. Our family witnessed, time and again, Debra's extraordinary facility in dealing with a sometimes semi-hostile court environment. Her body language is confidant, always accompanied by a big smile: she's on, she is ready, and you understand you're in the very best of hands. She won our case. Michelle H.

Debra White and her partner are AWESOME!!!!!!!. August 2018, I was looking at 30 yrs in Federal prison. I asked a friend can you get me the best of the best Attorney he recommended, Ms. White. I called her, and a lot of my fears subsided. She made me feel that she should fight for me and give me her best, and she did just that. I ended up getting a LOT less than I anticipated; my co-conspirator received between 5 to 21 years, and I received home confinement. She was the angel I need. If you are ever in legal trouble, do not hesitate to call on her.

It was August 7, 2018 when my life turned upside down. My wife and I just woke up, ready to continue with our day to day when we were faced with 12 armed, homeland security agents at out front door. Now as I look back with all of this behind me, I was beyond lucky to have a friend who gave me Debrah White’s phone number, to which she teamed up with Karen Goldstein. They walked me through every possible scenario and ultimately I was facing maximum sentence of 30 years behind bars. It was definitely the most tumultuous and detrimental 2 years of my life. My Coconspirators received four, five and 21 years of prison. Meanwhile my lawyers fought their hardest and because of them I got one year of home confinement with 3 years of probation. While the sentencing I received versus what I should have gotten speaks volumes it does them no justice. Not only did they put up with me for two years but they are brilliant, fearless, and fought as if I were their family just to get me the best possible outcome. This may seem implausible, I pretty much thought the same thing. A while back I was reading some of the testimonies from Debra’s and Karen’s past clients I figured that maybe their cases were less difficult or at the least just completely different than mine. But after two years of many battles (big and bigger) I can tell you that they are capable of what seems like the impossible. Thank you Debra and Karen for dragging me every step of the way out of that long, dark tunnel.

I found Atty. Alix on google and just tried to inquire about my immigration status. She was very helpful as she tried to explain everything to me that is accordance to the law and her experience as an immigration attorney. It gave me a breather because I can totally depend on her guidance and expertise and not to merely depend on hearsays or what we read on the internet. I highly recommend this attorney as she is very prompt and respond quickly on emails. I wish her more luck and success!

From the first call with Anna, I felt supported and heard, which was important to me given the nature of my case. Anna was realistic and honest in providing her opinion, while still maintaining empathy and taking great care to make sure my asks were represented. She navigated my case meticulously, and I felt empowered to have someone of her calibre by my side. As a young person with no experience, Anna spent many phone calls working through questions I had and explaining the nuances of different elements I was confused about. She always had suggestions and explanations which I appreciated, and helped me understand the rhythm of the process. We were able to reach a speedy conclusion and I am so grateful to have found such a wonderful attorney despite the circumstances that led me to her!

In addition to being exceptional at her job and incredibly professional, Anna handled my case with great empathy and patience. I'm sure a lot of the people she represents come into the situation with a lot of stress and anxiety - I sure did. She walked me through the process, laid out my options, and answered every single one of my questions with zero judgement. It's been an interesting "silver lining" to have such delightful interactions with Anna in the midst of all of this. Having Anna advocate for me brought so much peace into my life during a time of stress and I can't recommend her enough. Thank you again for your expertise and time!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Los Angeles, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
