Paul Dane helped me with my divorce in 2012/2013. He was recommended to me by a good friend and he helped me with my divorce and treated me well. He is located in Martinez and found that to be a plus since the court room is just a few blocks from his office. Someone else would of charged me hours of travel time. I recommended all my good friends in need to him cuz thats how I was introduced to him. I been sending friends to him for years and always gotten good feedback from them. Latinos are not good at writing reviews so don't judge a book by its cover with out giving it a shot yourself.

I hired Mr. Paul Dane for my divorce settlement. He was my second lawyer, he said that my case could be completed for a $5000 retainer fee. He didn't file paper work with court until over a year later, when I asked what was going on. He said the $5000 was all gone after one court filing and many emails with a long list of his vacation dates.

I came to US in January 2014 to marry my ex-husband, we got married in April 2014, lived less than a year and broke up in March 2015. Our marriage wasn’t good but when my ex-husband left me it was a surprise. While I was at work he took all the expensive stuff out of our condo, transferred all the money from our joint account to his personal account (at that moment I didn’t have my own account, only joint), also when we were buying our property, he and his agent asked me to sign some paper, I did it but actually it was Quitclaim Deed, I found out it only when we were divorcing. I had been in America only for one year and fully trusted my ex-husband but he did everything to leave me with nothing and throw me out on a street like a toy. On the same day when he left I received a letter from his attorney and from that day they were sending to me threatening letters every day. I had no money (I had $25 and had to wait 2 weeks until next paycheck), no family, no friends, no knowledge how to act in this situation. In additional to all this he tried to do everything to leave me without any US documents. At that moment I had my conditional green card so he was thinking up some stories (he called it “evidence”) and contacted USCIS and American Embassy in my native country to have me departed from US. He even called the police and said that I broke into his home when he wasn’t there, he asked the police to put me in jail, he really tried to break my life. When I contacted Oksana I was just lost, scared and exhausted of threats. Oksana took care of everything – divorce, immigration problems and related to it matters. Everything what we discussed were solved like we planned. We had to divorce before my conditional green card expires, so she did everything very quickly but it didn’t impact the quality of her work, she could prove that quitclaim deed is not legit and I wasn’t aware of what I was signing so she could prove that the condo was a community property and a half of the amount from the sale of the condo belongs to me. Recently I received my permanent green card without any RFE or interview and again it’s all thanks to Oksana! Oksana is a highly professional attorney and a wonderful person. The work she has done is amazing! She perfectly knows her job, she is always prepared and keeps everything under control. All cases are very stressful but Oksana was the only person who could keep me calm and positive. Every time when I talked or met Oksana I was convinced again and again that I am in very good hands. Oksana, thank you very very much for your great, perfect, amazing work as an attorney and your sincere, very necessary support at such moments as a person!!

I hired Oksana for my temporary and now permanent green card process. We experienced ease and flow in our entire process. Oksana was eager to assist us with whatever questions I had (and I can have many at times ;) in a prompt manner. In addition she kept us updated and informed at any time. So highly grateful for Oksana's services and making this feel like a "breeze". Highly recommended!

Michael has been practicing law and helping folks with DUI arrests since before most of his clients were born. That is not meant to be disparaging of his age, but the fact is that that experience--knowing the personalities involved and the "ins-and-outs" of the Martinez courts was invaluable. Michael and I worked together to prepare a case based on my actions that resulted in a better outcome than I had expected.

Facing the shame, guilt and remorse of being charged with DUI and hit and run I looked for an attorney. I was blessed to find Michael. Michael immediately told me I was not alone and laid out the process in an easily understandable way. There were no surprises except for a good one. Everything went smoothly as planned. Michael is professional, knowledgeable and kind. I highly recommend him.

Mr. Cuthbertson is truly one of the best lawyers I have ever met. I have been involved with many lawyers and unfortunately most of them they were there just because of money. He answered my emails right back every time I sent him an email. He talked to me patiently even when he was representing my son. He was compassionate and understanding every time I spoke with him. He informed me and my son right away if there were ever any changes in my son’s case. Sometime I felt I was talking to a good friend and not an attorney. Mr. Cuthbertson diligently took time on his personal time to work on my son’s case. Even often he visited my son in Jail just to comfort him for his case. He was amazing in every aspect.

Public Defender's tend to catch a lot of flack about ACTUALLY defending you, because their paychecks come from the same place as the district attorneys. Not this guy! He was the only one who listened to me and saw that I was trying and not being treated fairly by the courts and law enforcement. I can say that I am no longer in the "system" and terminated my probation successfully for the first time in over 10 years because of him. Thanks from everyone you've helped Matt!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Martinez, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
